NARRATOR: (v.o.) Previously on "Lost"...

FADE IN.

[Scene from 1X08: Solitary]

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Sayid is walking through the jungle.)

CUT TO:

(Close-up of: Sayid kneels down and looks at the trip wire running horizontally
along the ground.)

(He gets up and carefully steps over the line.)

(He clears the trip line successfully, but something else is triggered and a
trap is set off. The ropes snap around Sayid's ankles and he is pulled up high
into the trees.)

SAYID: Aah!

(Sayid swings, turns and sees himself headed for the nearby tree. He hits the
tree with a thud, the protruding branch stabbing him in the thigh.)

CUT TO:

SAYID: (v.o.) I found the wire on the beach.

[INT. DANIELLE ROUSSEAU'S SHELTER -- NIGHT]

(Sayid is tied to a wire bed frame.)

SAYID: I thought it might have something to do with a transmission we picked up
on our receiver.

CUT TO:

SAYID: A French woman repeating on a loop for sixteen years.

(Danielle Rousseau steps out from the shadows and into the light.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: Has it really been that long?

CUT TO:

(Sayid talks with Danielle Rousseau.)

SAYID: Have you seen other people on this island?

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: No. But I hear them. They whisper.

[Scene from 1X14: Special]

[INT. CAVES -- DAY]

(Michael talks with Jack, Sayid and Shannon.)

MICHAEL: We need to get off this island.

JACK: Are you suggesting something?

MICHAEL: Yeah. We build a raft.

[Scene from 1X17: ... In Translation]

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Michael is working on the raft.)

JACK: Ah, you're making a lot of progress.

MICHAEL: Yeah, trying. I got this bamboo for the decking, a piece of the
fuselage for a cabin.

[Scene from 1X22: Born to Run ]

(The guys put the cabin piece up on the raft.)

MICHAEL: (v.o.) It'll work.

(FAR SHOT of: Sun stands on the side and watches the men work on the raft.)

MICHAEL: (v.o.) We can do this.

[Scene from 1X22: Born to Run]

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Leslie Arzt talks to the group.)

LESLIE ARZT: It's been raining every afternoon. That means that we are on the
cusp of monsoon season.

SAWYER: (scoffs) Why are we listening to Arzt? You're a damn high school
science teacher.

LESLIE ARZT: I was just assuming you didn't want to die.

MICHAEL: So when do we have to leave?

LESLIE ARZT: (shrugs) Yesterday.

FADE TO BLACKEND OF TEASER

FADE IN.

[INT. (SYDNEY) MOTEL ROOM - EARLY MORNING - WALT'S FLASHBACK]

(CLOSE-UP of the Oceanic ticket folder on the bedside table next to the phone,
lamp and an open snack package. In the background, we hear planes flying
overhead.)

(Walt pulls the curtains open and we see that he's still in Sydney. It's pre-
dawn dark outside. Walt looks outside.)

(Inside, we see that Michael is sleeping in the motel room bed.)

(Suddenly, the television goes on to a Power Rangers show, the volume louder
than polite.)

(Michael groans and stirs.)

(We see Walt sitting on his bed watching television, the light on and not caring
that he's waking Michael up.)

MICHAEL: Whoa. What are you doing?

WALT: Watching TV.

(Michael groans and checks the clock. It's 5:23 in the morning.)

MICHAEL: Oh, man, you see what time it is? Go back to sleep, Walt.

WALT: I always watch this show.

MICHAEL: Okay, then. Could you at least turn it down?

(Walt deliberately turns the volume up louder.)

MICHAEL: I said turn it down, Walt.

WALT: Brian lets me watch it as loud as I want.

(Michael sits up and grabs the remote from Walt.)

MICHAEL: I'm not Brian.

(He turns the television set off.)

(Walt grabs Vincent's leash and heads for the door.)

WALT: Damn. Let's go, Vincent.

MICHAEL: Hey, where do you think you're going? Hey!

(Walt ignores Michael and heads out of the room.)

[INT. (SYDNEY) MOTEL - HALLWAY -- EARLY MORNING - CONTINUOUS -- WALT'S
FLASHBACK]

(Walt heads through the hallway. Michael runs out of the room in his underwear
trying to catch up with Walt.)

MICHAEL: Walt!

WALT: (shouts) Get away from me! Leave me alone!

MICHAEL: Don't even -- don't you think -- don't you walk away from me!

WALT: I said, get away from me!

(Walt reaches the elevator and tries to get inside, but Michael grabs him.)

MICHAEL: Walt -Look, I don't think so.

(Michael grabs Walt and pulls him struggling through the hallway.)

WALT: (shouts) Get off of me!

MICHAEL: (scolds) Look, I don't like this, either, but you're getting on that
plane.

WALT: (shouts) No, I'm not!

(A room door opens and a hotel guest appears in the doorway as Michael pulls
Walt back to the room.)

HOTEL GUEST (MAN): Hey, what's going on?

MICHAEL: It's okay. I'm his father.

WALT: No, you're not! You're not my father! You're not my father!

CUT TO: END OF WALT'S FLASHBACKRESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - MICHAEL'S SHELTER - MORNING -- PRESENT]

(Michael and Walt are sleeping side-by-side. Walt stirs and wakes up. He
glances at Michael and gets up quietly as not to disturb him.)

(The rest of the camp is sleeping.)

(Walt gets up and rubs his eyes. He makes his way across the camp and heads
over to the trees. He unzips his pants and relieves himself in front of the
large tree.)

(Suddenly, he hears rustling coming from his right. He turns to look. He sees
the tall grass moving. Still, he hears rustling and looks around. Then, he
sees her: A dark-haired woman he's never seen before carrying a rifle and
headed slowly for the camp.)

(Quickly, Walt finishes, zips up and hides behind the tree. The woman hasn't
seen him. Cautiously and quickly, Walt heads back to the camp.)

(Danielle continues to head for the beach camp.)

(Walt stops behind a shelter pole and looks at Danielle. Danielle turns and
sees Walt.)

(With no reason now to hide, Walt stands up and runs to get Michael. Danielle,
her eyes on Walt, follows slowly.)

WALT: Dad! Dad, wake up!

(Michael wakes up, as do some others in the camp.)

MICHAEL: What?

(Michael looks around for Walt.)

MICHAEL: What?

WALT: Somebody's here!

(Michael gets up. Murmuring grows louder in the camp as others realize that
Danielle is there.)

(Sawyer steps out from his shelter.)

(Michael heads to Danielle to intercept her.)

MICHAEL: Hey! Hey! Hey, hey, hey, stop!

(Claire wakes up and puts a protective hand over her baby. Sawyer heads over to
see what's going on. Charlie also gets up and stands in front of Claire and the
baby.)

MICHAEL: Slow -- slow down.

(From the back of the camp, Sayid rushes forward to see what's going on.)

(By now, most of the camp is awake and well aware that Danielle is there.)

MICHAEL: Stay right there. (points) Who is that?

SAWYER: (quietly) That's got to be the French chick.

(Sayid takes charge.)

SAYID: Calm down, everyone. It's all right.

(Sayid heads over toward Danielle.)

(Claire's baby starts crying. Danielle stops and looks directly at Claire and
her baby.)

SAYID: (quietly) Danielle? Danielle?

(Danielle turns around and looks at Sayid.)

SAYID: What are you doing here?

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: The others are coming.

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH -- MORNING]

(Danielle talks with the group gathered around her.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: On this island sixteen years ago. There were six of us. My
team -- six.

(Jack steps closer to listen.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: At that time, I was already seven months pregnant. I
delivered the infant myself. The baby and I were together for only one week
when I saw black smoke. A pillar of black smoke five kilometers inland. That
night ... they came. They came ... and took her. Alex. They took my baby.

(Charlie turns and looks at Claire. Claire adjusts her hold on her baby.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: And now ... they're coming again. They're coming for all of
you.

(Jack steps forward.)

JACK: Who's coming?

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: The others. You have only three choices. Run ...

(Charlie looks at her.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: ... hide

(Michael says nothing. Danielle turns and looks at Locke.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: ... or die.

(Camera holds on Jack.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - TO BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Jack and Locke talk.)

JACK: This is a woman that blew up her own shelter, and now she's talking about
seeing black smoke and hearing whispers. I mean, she's not playing with a full
deck.

LOCKE: That doesn't mean that what she's saying isn't true.

JACK: Well, if you want to focus on the what if, be my guest, but I got to
stick with what's tangible, and right now, that's the launching of the raft.

(Jack and Locke reach the boat site. Jack walks up to Michael.)

JACK: How's it going?

(Michael is working on a bamboo pole. He shakes his head.)

MICHAEL: I wanted to get off today, but, realistically, man, after we get the
rudder done, we still got to lay the rails to get her down to the water.

(Michael hands the pole up to Jin, who is on the raft.)

JACK: But wouldn't it save time if we were laying the rails while you were
finishing the rudder?

(Michael is moving around the raft as he answers Jack's questions.) MICHAEL:
Manpower shortage.

JACK: What do you need to lay the rails and move the boat?

MICHAEL: Get it all done today? Pretty much everybody.

(Jack turns around and looks back at the beach.)

JACK: All right, give me twenty minutes.

(Jack heads back to the beach campsite. Michael nods, but continues to work.)

(Camera moves to Locke, who remains quietly near the raft.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - DAY]

(Jack is talking with a group of men. They're all moving back to the boat
site.)

JACK: Grab as many palm tree logs as you can find. The longer, the better.
Take them over to the raft area. Michael will know what to do with them.

MAN: Okay, see you there.

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE - DAY]

(Everyone has gathered around the raft. There are men holding ropes ready to
pull the boat onto the rails, the others who are stationed around the raft, and
Sawyer and Hurley, who are standing behind the raft with levers to help lift the
raft.)

MICHAEL: You need to get them in there tight. You need leverage to get them on
the rails.

VOICE (MAN): Got it. Yep, that's good.

(Sawyer and Hurley take hold of the levers on the back of the raft.)

MICHAEL: Good. That's good.

(Michael checks their position.

MICHAEL: Okay, that's good, man.

(Shannon is also there to help lift the raft. Sayid stands next to her and
glances at her.)

MICHAEL: Just get it under there, okay?

(Satisfied with everything, Michael stands to the side of the raft.)

MICHAEL: Okay. (to Locke) You all right?

LOCKE: Yep.

(Michael's ready to start.)

MICHAEL: So listen, on my count -- I'll do "1, 2, 3" -- lift and then push,
okay? You got it?

(Charlie nods.)

CHARLIE: Okay.

MICHAEL: You got it. Okay, come on.

(Sawyer reaches down to take hold of the lever. Camera refocuses on Kate on the
opposite side of the raft, also leaning forward to take hold of the raft.)

MICHAEL: Once we get it down to the waterline, we'll drop it and load it up.

(Locke and the others get a grip on the raft.)

MICHAEL: All right. Ready.

(Sun watches Jin adjust his grip on the raft.)

MICHAEL: Okay.

(Michael grabs hold of one of the ropes.)

(Jack gets a grip on the raft.)

MICHAEL: One ...

(Camera moves alongside the raft.)

MICHAEL: Two ...

(Sawyer glances at Kate as he adjusts his grip on the back lever.)

MICHAEL: Three! Lift!

(Everyone lifts. Hurley and Sawyer both use the levers at the back of the raft.
The others around the raft lift using their hands.)

(The raft slowly rises from the sand.)

MICHAEL: Push!

(The raft is moved forward to rest on the rails set on the sand.)

MICHAEL: Push! Come on, guys! Push!

(The raft moves forward.)

MICHAEL: Push!
MICHAEL: Use your lever!
MICHAEL: Use the lever!

MICHAEL: Down!

(The raft is set down on the rails.)

MICHAEL: Down. Good, good. One, two, three! Lift!

MICHAEL: Let's keep this straight!

(The raft starts moving on down on the rails. It picks up speed as it heads
down toward the ocean. Too much speed and uncontrolled.)

JIN: (alarmed) (shouts in Korean) (unsubtitlted) !!!

MICHAEL: Whoa, whoa, whoa!

(The raft slides off the rails and hits the sand. The sudden stop causes the
mast to fall off the raft.)

MICHAEL: Oh, no! That hurt!
MICHAEL: (angry) I can't believe this! I can't believe it.

(Michael glares at Sawyer.)

SAWYER: What are you looking at me for? It's not my fault.

MICHAEL: You missed the lever.

(As the two men argue, everyone takes a breather. Walt looks around.)

SAWYER: (retorts angrily) Just because you couldn't keep the raft going
straight.

MICHAEL: I couldn't keep the boat going straight --

(Walt sees something alarming.

WALT: Dad!

MICHAEL: What?

WALT: (points) Look!

(Michael and the others all turn around to see what Walt is pointing at. They
walk past Claire, who also stands up with her baby.)

(TOP ANGLE DOWN on the group on the beach. Their eyes are fixed on something
inland, high above the trees. They all take a couple steps closer.)

(OFF JACK: There a good distance inland is a long column of thick, black smoke
rising from a point on the island. The camera moves around and stops on Jack.)

(Not liking it, Jack turns and walks away.)

JACK: (v.o.) How many of them are there?

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH CAMP - DAY]

(Danielle polishes her rifle.)

(She looks at the small group surrounding her - Jack, Locke, Sayid and Hurley.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: I told you all I know.

SAYID: There has to be more you can tell us. How did you know?

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: You have a bigger problem. I can vanish into the jungle,
but I'm just one person.

(Danielle puts her rifle back together and lifts it to look down the scope.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: You have forty people. Where will you hide them?

(She pulls the trigger, the rifle clicking.)

(Jack and Locke exchange a knowing look.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - THE HATCH -- DAY]

(The hatch. Hurley steps forward and gets a good look at the hatch.)

HURLEY: Dude. Whoa.

(Danielle walks down into the trench around the hatch. She walks up to the
hatch and touches it.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: What is this?

JACK: We were hoping you could tell us.

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: I've never seen anything like it.

HURLEY: Uh, question -- how do we know we can all, like, fit in there?

LOCKE: No handle on the outside means there must be another way in. Another
entrance means space.

(Danielle is standing on the hatch looking down at the window.)

SAYID: This is a mistake. We don't know anything about these others.

(Danielle caresses the window with her hand.)

SAYID: We're reacting with no information, no intelligence. This hatch might
even be theirs. (Sayid stands up and speaks louder to Danielle.) Black smoke
on the horizon doesn't mean --

(Danielle looks at Sayid.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: (insistent) It means they're coming.

JACK: Yeah, we got that.

LOCKE: You booby-trapped your shelter with explosives. Do you have any more?

(Jack looks at Locke. Danielle stands up.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: Dynamite. At the Black Rock. In the "dark territory".

HURLEY: Well, that's three reasons to go right there.

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: If we are to make it back by sunset, we have to leave within
the hour.

(Danielle turns and leaves. Locke looks pointedly at Jack, who doesn't say
anything. Locke turns and follows Danielle. Jack also turns to leave.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. (SYDNEY) AIRPORT BAR -- DAY - JACK'S FLASHBACK]

(Jack is sitting at the bar finishing his drink when a young woman walks in and
takes a seat near him.)

(Jack puts his drink down and rubs his eyes.)

ANA LUCIA: (to the bartender) Tequila and tonic with a wedge of lemon.

(She turns and looks at Jack.)

ANA LUCIA: Why were you yelling? (Jack gives her a puzzled look, not
understanding what she's talking about.) The girl at the check-in counter. You
were yelling at her.

(He chuckles a little.)

JACK: I'm sorry uh ... do I know you?

ANA LUCIA: I'm on your flight. L.A?

(Jack nods.)

ANA LUCIA: So your dad died, huh?

JACK: I thought you didn't hear what I was yelling about.

ANA LUCIA: I was being polite.

JACK: (nods) Yeah. My dad died.

ANA LUCIA: How?

JACK: A heart attack.

(Jack coughs.)

ANA LUCIA: Not a drinker, huh?

JACK: No. No, not really.

(She glances at him, pauses, then decides to ask anyway.)

ANA LUCIA: No ring 'cause you're single or because you don't like wearing one?

JACK: Are you asking me if I'm married?

ANA LUCIA: Are you married?

JACK: (shakes his head) No. No, not anymore. Could I get another tequila and
tonic, please?

ANA LUCIA: I didn't think you were listening.

(She moves over one chair closer to Jack.)

JACK: So what's your name?

ANA LUCIA: Ana-Lucia.

(They shake hands.)

JACK: So tell me, Ana-Lucia, -- (He checks his watch) -- why are you drinking
tequila and tonics at 10 to noon?

ANA LUCIA: I hate flying. And they stuck me all the way in the back of the
plane where the wheels come down right under your damn feet. (Jack chuckles as
he takes another sip.) So where are you sitting?

(Jack takes his ticket out and checks.)

JACK: 23-B.

ANA LUCIA: 42-F. Want to trade?

(Jack laughs.)

(Ana Lucia's phone rings. She answers it.)

ANA LUCIA: Hey. Yeah, I'm ... hold on. (She stands up.) Sorry ...

JACK: Uh, Jack.

ANA LUCIA: Jack, I got to talk. Um ... We'll have the next drink on the plane,
okay?

(He smiles.)

JACK: 42-F.

(She smiles as she puts some bills on the counter.)

ANA LUCIA: 42-F. Right.

(Ana Lucia heads for the door. She stops.)

ANA LUCIA: And, Jack ...

(Jack turns and looks at her.)

ANA LUCIA: The worst part's over.

(She smiles and leaves.)

(Camera holds on Jack as he watches her go.)

JACK: (v.o.) Look, I know you're all scared, ...

CUT TO: END OF JACK'S FLASHBACK.RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH -- DAY - PRESENT]

(Jack addresses the group.)

JACK: Ok, I know you're all scared, and I know that everybody has a lot of
questions.

(He looks around. Shannon pulls the edges of her sweater closed.)

JACK: All I can tell you right now is that we do have a plan. We've got to go
into the jungle to get some supplies. We'll be back in a few hours. (Dr.
Leslie Arzt nods as he listens.) In the meantime, do everything you can to help
Michael get that raft on the water. And after that, go to the caves. We'll be
back as soon as we can. I promise.

(Jack turns to leave; the group disburses. Dr. Leslie Arzt pushes his way
toward Jack.)

LESLIE ARZT: Hey, nice speech. The plan's a little flawed, but, hey, nobody's
perfect.

JACK: My plan?

LESLIE ARZT: Yeah, your plan. You're going to go into the jungle and get some
dynamite and blow open a hatch, and then you're going to hide everyone inside.

(Jack stops and looks at Leslie Arzt.)

LESLIE ARZT: You want to keep a secret, don't tell the fat guy.

JACK: What do you want, Arzt?

LESLIE ARZT: God knows how long that dynamite has been out there. And from
what I can tell, Madame Nutso doesn't seem too concerned with how to handle it.
So unless you want to blow up, I'm coming with you.

JACK: Okay. Grab some water bottles. We're leaving in a half an hour.

(Jack leaves. Leslie Arzt turns and heads in the opposite direction.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Michael and Jin consider the best way to fix the broken mast.)

MICHAEL: We can salvage the cable, but we need new bamboo for the mast.

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

MICHAEL: We need to fix the rudder before we even start to think about that.

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Michael and Jin walk around the raft as they discuss what to do. Although
they're talking each in their own language, they appear to understand the other.
Sawyer walks up to them.)

SAWYER: You boys need some help?

MICHAEL: (to Jin) Let's get this done first.

(They both walk past Sawyer, their minds on the mast. Sawyer stops them.)

SAWYER: Hey! This wasn't my fault.

(Michael stops and turns around.)

JIN: (o.s.) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

SAWYER: So put me to work.

MICHAEL: (to Sawyer) No offense. We just work faster this way, okay?

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Michael turns around to address Jin.)

MICHAEL: All right.

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

Michael: All right. What do you think I'm doing over here?

(Camera holds on Sawyer.)

CUT TO:

[INT. (SYDNEY) POLICE STATION -- DAY - SAWYER'S FLASHBACK]

(Sawyer is pushed down into the seat, his wrists are handcuffed behind him. The
detective sits across the desk from Sawyer.)

CALDERWOOD: You remember me? Three nights ago, you were hauled in here
thrashing and fighting. As you were being escorted by, you kicked my desk ...
and you broke my mug.

(He picks up the broken mug glued back together. It's a family mug with a
picture of his two children, a girl and a boy, on it.)

SAWYER: Nice kids.

CALDERWOOD: Sadly for you, breaking my mug was not the most significant mistake
you made that evening.

SAWYER: Come on, doctor. I got into a bar fight. Ain't that a badge of honor
in this country?

CALDERWOOD: You know who you head-butted in that bar? You head-butted the
Honorable Warren Truss. (Sawyer squints his eyes at Calderwood.) Minister of
Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry. One of the most important -

SAWYER: (interrupts) He head-butted me.

CALDERWOOD: (interrupts) We have witnesses he did no such thing.

SAWYER: (smirks) Of course.

CALDERWOOD: You think this is funny ... James?

(Sawyer stops smiling.)

(Calderwood opens a file folder in front of him and starts reading.)

CALDERWOOD: James Ford -- assault, wire fraud, identity theft, bank fraud,
telemarketing fraud --

SAWYER: Is this going someplace?

CALDERWOOD: You're a blight, a stain, a scavenger. You're a con man who preys
on the weak and the needy. Tell me something, James --how do you live with
yourself?

SAWYER: I do just fine.

CALDERWOOD: Do you? You're not even worth what it would cost us to incarcerate
you, which is why you're being deported.

(He puts the OCEANIC ticket cover on top of the file folder labeled FORD, JAMES
/ ID NO. 246-304???.)

CALDERWOOD: Your plane leaves this afternoon. And, James -- you're banned from
ever setting foot in Australia again.

(An officer comes to escort Sawyer out. Sawyer and Calderwood both stand up.)

SAWYER: Don't you worry. I ain't never coming back here.

CALDERWOOD: Best not, mate.

(The officer escorts Sawyer away.)

CUT TOEND OF SAWYER'S FLASHBACKRESUME TO PRESENT

[EXT. BAMBOO JUNGLE -- DAY -- PRESENT]

(Sawyer is hacking away at a tall bamboo tree, determined to cut it down.)

(Cut to: The bamboo tree is on the ground. Sawyer unravels some wire the
length of the tree. Jack walks up to him.)

JACK: (o.s.) A lumberjack.

(Sawyer turns around.)

SAWYER: Excuse me?

JACK: Never asked you what you did back in the real world, so ... I'm taking a
wild guess --lumberjack.

SAWYER: Something I can help you with, doc? 'Cause I got work to do.

(Jack takes out one of the guns. He removes the clip. Sawyer hears the
familiar sound and stops working to look at Jack.)

JACK: Got something for you.

(Jack hands Sawyer the empty gun, handle first.)

JACK: You're the only one on the raft who knows how to use one.

(He also hands Sawyer a clip.)

SAWYER: What do I need a gun for?

JACK: Just in case.

(Sawyer puts the clip in the gun.)

SAWYER: You think we're going to run out of food or water? Am I supposed to
put the kid out of his misery?

JACK: (repeats) Just in case.

(Jack takes the Halliburton and starts to leave. Sawyer stops him.)

SAWYER: What are you doing with the rest of them?

JACK: I'm giving them to Sayid.

(Jack continues to walk away. Again, Sawyer stops him.)

SAWYER: Going into the jungle after the boom sticks, huh?

JACK: Yeah.

SAWYER: By the time you get back, we'll be in the water. Guess this is pretty
much goodbye, then.

JACK: Yeah, I guess it is. Good luck, Sawyer.

(Jack turns to leave. Sawyer ponders telling Jack something that he's known for
a while.)

SAWYER: Jack.

(Jack stops and turns around. He heads back toward Sawyer.)

SAWYER: About a week before we all got on the plane ... (Sawyer puts his shirt
on.) I got to talking with this man in a bar in Sydney. He was an American,
too -- a doctor.

(Sawyer buttons his shirt.)

SAWYER: I've been on some benders in my time, but this guy -- he was going for
an all-time record. It turns out this guy has a son. The son's a doctor, too.

(Sawyer has his complete attention now.)

SAWYER: And they'd had some kind of big-time falling out. The guy knew it was
his fault, even though his son was back in the States thinking the same damn
thing. See, kids are like dogs -- if you knock them around enough, they'll
think they did something to deserve it.

(Jack is silent as he listens.)

SAWYER: Anyway ... there's a pay phone in this bar, and this guy ... Christian
... tells me he wishes he had the stones to pick up the phone and call his kid.
Tell him he's sorry, that he's a better doctor than he'll ever be.

(Overcome with emotion, Jack turns away. Sawyer watches Jack.)

SAWYER: He's proud. He loves him.

(Jack struggles not to cry.)

SAWYER: I had to take off, but ... something tells me he never got around to
making that call. Small world, huh?

(Jack nods.)

JACK: Yeah.

SAWYER: Good luck, Jack.

(Jack looks at Sawyer, their eyes meet. Sawyer nods and turns away. Camera
holds on Jack. Jack turns and leaves.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. (SYDNEY) AIRPORT SECURITY - BACKROOM -- DAY - KATE'S FLASHBACK]

(The airport official puts the key in the lock, twists and opens the Halliburton
case.)

AIRPORT OFFICIAL: Are you gonna be armed?

MARSHAL: (o.s.) Yes, sir, ankle holster.

AIRPORT OFFICIAL: You'll have to stow this in the crew luggage compartment in
the front.

(The airport official looks through the case.)

MARSHAL: (o.s.) No problemo.

AIRPORT OFFICIAL: Why do you need five guns?

(The marshal turns to look at Kate, who is sitting in the chair with handcuffs
around her wrists - her wrists are handcuffed in front.)

MARSHAL: Gee, you want to tell him, Kate? Why do I need five guns?

(The marshal looks at the airport official.)

MARSHAL: She's shy.

(The airport official picks up the toy airplane.)

AIRPORT OFFICIAL: What's this, then?

MARSHAL: That's a good story. You want to tell it, huh, Kate?

(Without a word, Kate looks at the marshal. The marshal takes the toy airplane
and starts the story.)

MARSHAL: This belonged to her childhood sweetheart, who she got killed a couple
of years ago when she was on the run. Poor guy. Had a wife, two-year-old kid.
(to Kate) What was his name? Hmm? (He walks around Kate.) Well, somewhere
along the way during the three years that I was chasing her, she starts calling
me at my house and whining on about her mitigating circumstances, but what she's
really doing ... is taunting me.

(The marshal floats the airplane in front of Kate's face.)

MARSHAL: So I tell her that I've got what's-his-name's little toy airplane ...
in a safe-deposit box in New Mexico, so she somehow figures out which bank,
which safe-deposit box. She seduces some idiot to rob the damn bank, and then
she puts a bullet in her new friend because she's done using him. But she
leaves all the money. She just takes the plane. Because that's the one thing
in the whole world that Kate does care about. She has no attachments ... and I
think she's telling herself she needs it to atone for killing her boyfriend ...
what's-his-name. God, Kate, come on. What was his name?

(Kate launches herself off her chair toward the marshal. She pushes her
handcuff chains into his neck as he slams into the far wall, his cheek against
the glass.)

KATE: Tom!

(The airport official gets to his feet.)

KATE: Tom! You son of a bitch --

(The marshal elbows Kate in the face. She falls to the ground with a thud.
Kate groans.)

KATE: Aah!

(The marshal turns to the airport official.)

MARSHAL: (mocks) And that is why I need five guns.

(On the floor, Kate looks at the small toy airplane just in front of her. She
reaches to grab it, but the marshal kicks the toy away.)

(He grabs her arm and hauls her to her feet.)

CUT TO:END OF KATE'S FLASHBACKRESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE - DAY - PRESENT]

(Kate walks up the beach. She heads over to Jack, who is packing his backpack.
He zips his bag up.)

KATE: So you're heading out?

(Jack looks at Kate and nods.)

JACK: Yeah.

(He goes back to his stuff.)

KATE: I was thinking that I might go with you ... (Jack looks at Kate.) ...
for old times' sake. I want to help.

(Jack looks at the raft as he takes a sip of his water.)

JACK: You won't be here for the raft launching.

KATE: Yeah, well, I'm -- I'm not very good at goodbyes.

JACK: Grab your stuff.

(Kate smiles gratefully. She turns and leaves.)

CUT TO:

[THE BLACK SMOKE]

(The column of black smoke continues to rise up into the sky.)

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Charlie holds out the bottle for the survivor to put his rolled-up slip of
paper inside.)

CHARLIE: Thanks, man. I'll keep it safe.

(Charlie tucks the pencil between his lips and heads over to find the next
person.)

CHARLIE: Hey, Locke, you have a message? It's going on the raft. (Charlie
walks up to Locke, who is digging through his backpack.) You know, "Dear mom,
everything's fine, I'm on the island -- unless, of course, the black smoke
people turn up. Love" -- your name here. When they get rescued, they can
contact your family.

LOCKE: A message in a bottle.

CHARLIE: hmm.

(Charlie smiles and shows Locke the bottle. Locke pats Charlie on the shoulder
as he heads out.)

LOCKE: How sweet.

(Charlie looks around for the next person. He sees Hurley and heads over to
him.)

CHARLIE: You ready?

HURLEY: Here you go.

(Charlie uncaps the bottle. Hurley holds up his rolled-up slip of paper.)

CHARLIE: Okay.

HURLEY: Don't look at it.

CHARLIE: Got it.

(Charlie takes the paper from Hurley and automatically starts to unroll it to
read. Hurley grabs his backpack and catches Charlie looking at the note.)

HURLEY: Dude! (Charlie stops unrolling the paper.) Do not look at it.

CHARLIE: All right.

(Charlie starts to put the paper in the bottle, but sees Leslie Arzt walking by.
He stops him.)

CHARLIE: Arzt, you want paper?

(Arzt turns and looks at Charlie.)

LESLIE ARZT: I gave at the office.

CHARLIE: Okay.

(Charlie turns and walks away. Camera follows Arzt as he turns away.)

CUT TO:

(Jack walks up to the raft. In the background, we see Locke talking with
Danielle. Jack's eyes are on Michael.)

(We see Michael and Hurley shaking hands as they walk past each other.)

MICHAEL: Be careful.

HURLEY: Good luck, dude.

(Hurley goes over to Walt.)

HURLEY: Keep dry, kiddo.

WALT: I will.

(Michael stops and sees Jack. He heads over to Jack. The two men shake hands.)

MICHAEL: Hey. Good luck.

JACK: Same to you.

(They give each other a quick hug.)

MICHAEL: See you soon.

JACK: Yes, you will.

(Michael walks away. Jack continues on toward Walt.)

JACK: Hey, guy.

WALT: Yeah.

(Jack grasps Walt's shoulders.)

JACK: Look after your dad, okay?

WALT: I will.

JACK: All right.

(Jack pats his shoulders, then turns to the raft. Jin is sitting on the raft.)

JACK: Jin ...

(Jin turns. Jack extends his hand. They shake hands.)

JACK: Good luck.

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Jack turns and leaves. He walks past Kate, who is looking around the raft area
for someone. She doesn't see him.)

(She glances back at Jack, who is walking away, but he looks back. Kate hurries
over to Charlie.)

KATE: Hey, uh, ... have you seen Sawyer?

CHARLIE: No.

JACK: (loudly) All right. Let's go.

(Kate looks at Jack. She's out of time.)

CHARLIE: Take care, okay?

(Kate nods and heads over to join the party that's going.)

(Kate continues to look around for Sawyer.)

(Jack, Danielle, Kate, Hurley, Arzt and Locke start their trek down the beach.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACHSIDE ROCKS - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(Danielle leads the small group across the rocks. We note that Kate is still
looking back at the beach as she follows them.)

(The small group walks around the rocks. Danielle stops. She removes her
backpack and puts it down. Everyone follows her lead and removes their
backpacks to take a small breather.)

(Danielle takes her outer shirt off. Locke wipes his brow and looks over. He
notices three scratch marks on Danielle's inner left arm near her elbow.)

LOCKE: Where'd you get the scratches?

(Danielle ties her shirt around her waist.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: A bush.

LOCKE: Mean bush.

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: We've got to keep moving.

(Everyone picks up their gear and heads out again. Hurley stands up and
follows. Arzt follows behind him.)

[EXT. ROCKS - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(The small group continues to follow Danielle across the rocks.)

HURLEY: Let me ask you something, Arnzt --

LESLIE ARZT: Arzt.

HURLEY: Arnzt.

LESLIE ARZT: No, not Arnzt. Arzt. A-R-Z-T. Arzt.

HURLEY: Sorry, man. Your name's hard to pronounce.

LESLIE ARZT: Oh, yeah? Well, I know a bunch of ninth graders who pronounce it
just fine.

HURLEY: How about I just call you by your first name?

LESLIE ARZT: How about you don't?

HURLEY: Why not? I remember it from the plane's manifest. I think Leslie's a
bitchin' name.

LESLIE ARZT: Arnzt is fine.

[EXT. STREAM - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(Danielle leads the group down a path running alongside a stream. The stream is
on the right. She moves quickly and efficiently with no hesitation on where
she's going.)

VARIOUS CUTS OF THE GROUP WALKING

[EXT. FOREST - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(The group is now walking under the trees. Danielle leads them up the rocks
with the stream on the left. The small group follows her.)

(Suddenly, Danielle stops. She touches a piece of black-colored wood.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: Territoire fonce.

(Jack looks around and nods.)

JACK: The "dark territory".

(Kate becomes very still and looks around.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: The Black Rock is not far. This is where it all began.
Where my team got infected, where Montand lost his arm. We must move quickly.

(Everyone is very quiet. Locke looks around the area.)

(Thunder rumbles in the distance.)

LESLIE ARZT: (spooked) You know what? I'm going back.

(Arzt turns to leave. Jack puts a hand on his shoulder and stops him.)

JACK: Hey. I thought you wanted to help.

LESLIE ARZT: Yeah, I wanted to help, but that was before Montand lost his
frickin' arm.

JACK: Well, what about the dynamite?

LESLIE ARZT: Just be very careful with it.

(Arzt turns and walks away. Kate shakes her head. She and Hurley start
following the others into the dark territory. Camera holds on Jack as he looks
back at Arzt.)

(Thunder rumbles in the distance.)

(Jack turns and follows them.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(The sun is shining; the skies are clear. Michael rushes over to Jin, who is
working on fixing the broken mast.)

MICHAEL: No, no, no. This one goes here. That one goes here.

JIN: Okay, okay. (something in Korean)

(Down below, Sawyer appears carrying a long bamboo pole on his shoulder.)

SAWYER: Hey, chief.

(Michael and Jin look down as Sawyer drops the bamboo pole onto the sand.)

SAWYER: Cut and measured to length. A perfect mast.

MICHAEL: Thanks.

SAWYER: Well, all right.

(Sawyer picks up the pole.)

SAWYER: Now, are we going to get off this rock or just stand around talking
about it?

(He hands the pole up to Michael and Jin. Jin smiles.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE -- THE DARK TERRITORY -- DAY]

(It's raining. Danielle continues to lead the group into the forest. She moves
quickly and efficiently. Thunder rumbles.)

(Suddenly, they all hear an unnatural staccato sound. Everyone stops and turns
around. The sounds get louder.)

(Danielle steps forward to listen.)

KATE: Did you hear that?

(The rhythmic sounds continue to get louder. Everyone stops and looks at the
foliage in front of them.)

(Then, they see him - Arzt - running back to the small group, his loud rhythmic
gasping for breath hindered only by his panic.)

(He sees them.)

LESLIE ARZT: (shouts) Run!

(The group stares at him. Locke, Hurley and Jack watch Arzt scream to them.)

LESLIE ARZT: (shouts) Run! Run! Run!

(Then they hear it. The roaring sound of the massive creature on the island.)

(Arzt bolts to the side.)

FADE OUT.

(The roar continues to echo.)

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. JUNGLE -- THE DARK TERRITORY -- DAY]

(Arzt bolts to the right.)

LESLIE ARZT: (shouts) Run!

(The creature roars. The group runs. All except Locke and Hurley.)

HURLEY: What are you -

LOCKE: Just be still.

(Locke holds out a hand for Hurley to stand still. Locke stares out at the
shrubbery in front of them.)

(The creature growls and exhales. We hear the loud stomp of something massive
hitting the ground.)

(Hurley turns and looks at the trees in front of them.)

(We hear the creature take another step.)

[ARZT & GROUP]

(Arzt continues to run. Kate follows him. Jack is not far behind. Echoes of
the creature's roar and sounds of the creature walking and moving are heard.)

(Jack turns to follow Kate, but Danielle is hiding in the trees.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: Here.

(Jack hears Danielle. He grabs Kate and pulls her back, guiding her toward
Danielle.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: In here.

(Kate and Jack join Danielle in the shelter of the trees. Sounds of the
creature growling are heard. The creature takes another loud step. Jack turns
and looks hard in the trees for signs of the creature.)

[HURLEY & LOCKE]

(The creature takes another step.)

(Hurley and Locke haven't moved from their spot.)

HURLEY: Dude, we got to book.

(The creature takes another step. Locke hears something.)

LOCKE: Wait.

(The stomping sounds are getting softer with distance.)

LOCKE: It's headed the other way.

(We hear the fading echoing sounds of a distant roar and the creature steps as
it moves away.)

(Locke relaxes and walks away from Hurley.)

(After a beat, Hurley follows Locke.)

[DANIELLE, JACK AND KATE]

(Danielle takes her rifle off her shoulder and holds it in her hands as she
looks up. They don't hear the creature sounds anymore. Jack continues to look
out at the jungle around them.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: We're safe now.

KATE: (scared) What was that thing?

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: It's a security system.

JACK: Security system. What does that mean?

(Danielle puts her gear back on.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: Its purpose is that of any security system's -- to protect
something.

KATE: Protect what?

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: The island.

(And with that cryptic remark, she heads out of the protection of the trees.)

(Kate and Jack share a confused look.)

(Kate follows Danielle out of the trees.)

[EXT. JUNGLE -- THE DARK TERRITORY - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(Locke and Hurley step out into the main clearing. They are joined by Danielle,
Jack and Kate.)

HURLEY: Uh, where's Arnzt?

(Arzt steps out from the bushes.)

LESLIE ARZT: That's Arzt, you idiot.

HURLEY: Dude, I thought you were dead.

LESLIE ARZT: Can we just please go get the dynamite, please?

(Jack looks around.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH CAMP - SHANNON'S SHELTER -- DAY]

(Shannon is sitting on her area folding Boone's clothes and putting them back
into the bag. Walt, holding Vincent on a leash, walks over to her.)

WALT: Why are you folding the clothes?

SHANNON: Because I'm anal.

(Walt is quiet. Shannon looks at Walt.)

SHANNON: Is there something you want?

WALT: I think you should take Vincent.

SHANNON: Are you serious?

WALT: He'll take care of you.

(Shannon kneels down in front of Walt. She pets Vincent.)

SHANNON: What makes you think I need a dog to take care of me?

WALT: Vincent took care of me when my mom died. And nobody would talk to me.
They'd pretend like nothing happened. So I could talk to Vincent. He's a good
listener. You could talk to him about Boone if you want.

(Touched, Shannon's eyes well up with tears. She blinks and smiles at Walt.)

SHANNON: All right. But only till you get us rescued, okay?

(Walt hands Vincent's leash over to Shannon. Shannon takes the leash.)

(Walt leans forward and kisses Vincent on the top of his head.)

(Camera holds on Shannon as she smiles at him.)

CUT TO:

[INT. (SYDNEY) AIRPORT LOBBY -- WAITING AREA/ESCALATOR -- DAY - SHANNON'S
FLASHBACK]

(Shannon is sitting across several chairs in the airport waiting area as she
works on a word search puzzle book. Planes fly overhead.)

VOICE (WOMAN): (over p.a.) Flight 338 to Fiji will be delayed. Please check
the board for flight details.

(Sayid walks up to her and puts his carry-on back down on the seat near her
feet.)

SAYID: Excuse me, would you mind watching my bag for a moment? I'll be right
back.

(Shannon barely looks up.)

SHANNON: Sure. Whatever.

SAYID: Thank you.

(Sayid turns and walks away, passing Boone, who is returning back to Shannon.)

BOONE: Couldn't get us into first class.

(Boone sits down next to Shannon.)

SHANNON: Why not?

BOONE: Um, maybe you shouldn't have yelled at the gate agent.

SHANNON: What, you're on his side now?

BOONE: One day you're going to appreciate everything I do for you.

SHANNON: Yeah, I can't wait for that day.

(Shannon grabs her bag and stands up. Boone watches her go before following
her.)

[EXT. (SYDNEY) AIRPORT -- ESCALATOR - DAY - SHANNON'S FLASHBACK -- CONTINUOUS]

(Boone and Shannon are riding up the escalator to the next floor.)

SHANNON: You can try again with the gate agent.

BOONE: Would you let it go?

SHANNON: Excuse me for not being pathetic enough to want to sit next to some
crying baby for the next fifteen hours.

BOONE: Oh, God. You can be a bitch.

SHANNON: Oh, you want to play? I will get you thrown off this flight.

BOONE: Yeah? How are you going to do it?

SHANNON: I can do whatever I want. I can tell them --

BOONE: (interrupts) Tell them what? Who's going to believe you? You're not
even capable of -

SHANNON: You have no idea what I am capable of.

(They step off the escalator. Shannon turns and walks over to the nearby
airport security guard standing there.)

SHANNON: Excuse me, sir?

AIRPORT SECURITY: Yes, ma'am.

SHANNON: Hi, um, some Arab guy just left his bags on the chairs downstairs and
then just walked away.

(Boone watches Shannon.)

AIRPORT SECURITY: Can you describe him, please?

SHANNON: Um, Arab? He went towards the shops.

(The airport security guard takes out his radio and starts talking as he runs
for the down escalator.)

(Shannon turns and smirks back at Boone.)

SHANNON: How's that?

(She walks past Boone. Boone turns and watches her go. He cant' believe she
just did that. He doesn't say a word before following her.)

CUT TO:END OF SHANNON'S FLASHBACKRESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY -- PRESENT]

(Sayid talks with Michael as work continues on fixing the raft.)

SAYID: I salvaged a few things for you from the Beechcraft. (Sayid holds out a
radar.) This is the plane's radar emitter. It needs to be mounted to the mast
or the top of the cabin.

SAWYER: I'll do it.

(Sayid nods and hands Sawyer the unit.)

SAYID: Michael, to conserve power, turn it on only once every hour or so.
(Michael nods.) It will show you any ships within the horizon line,
approximately 25 miles. (Sawyer starts to mount the unit on the mast, tying it
with a long piece of cloth.) The same with the radio transmitter.

(Sawyer picks up a flare gun.)

SAYID: This was in the plane's toolbox. There's only one flare.

(He opens it and shows it to Michael. He shuts it and gives it to Michael. Jin
is standing just behind Sayid and watches.)

SAYID: Choose wisely when you use it.

(Michael checks the flare gun and closes it.)

(Sayid turns and puts a hand on Jin's shoulder.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE -- THE DARK TERRITORY -- DAY]

(It's stopped raining. Danielle continues to lead them through the jungle. She
stops, her eyes fixated to the side.)

LOCKE: Why are we stopping?

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: Because we're here.

(He turns and looks. One by one, the group stops and looks off to the side.
Hurley's eyes are wide as he looks up at something we don't see.)

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: This is the Black Rock.

(OFF THE SMALL GROUP: Locke and Jack step forward, their eyes fixated on
something high and large.)

(Camera sweeps around the group to show what they're looking at: A large wooden
frigate covered with overgrown vines, its broken mast leaning against the side
of the ship. The words on the ship read:
BLACK ROCK
PORTSMOUTH )

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. (SYDNEY) AIRPORT LOBBY - DAY - SUN'S FLASHBACK]

OVERHEAD: Final boarding call for flight 2599 ...

(Sun carries an orange tray with two cups of covered coffee and a small clear
plastic container of something. She stops abruptly on her way back to the table
when one of the coffee cups nearly tips over. She grabs at it and makes her way
back slowly to Jin.)

(Jin sits at one of the tables reading a Korean newspaper. He looks up as she
approaches.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Why did it take so long?]

(Sun puts the tray on the table. She sits down.)

SUN (in Korean) [subtitled: I'm really hungry now. There were a lot of
people in line.]

(She opens a napkin.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: There really wasn't much to choose from, so I
just got some simple things for us.]

(She reaches over to Jin and puts the open napkin down on his lap for him. He
moves the paper a bit to make room for her.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Here.]

(Sun sits back down.)

(The American woman sitting nearby can't help but comment loudly on it to her
husband.)

GINA: (loud) If you ever catch me doing anything like that for you, shoot me.

JEFF: Don't knock it. Their divorce rate's 20 times lower than ours.

(Sun hears every word. She doesn't say anything.)

[Note: Korean Translation from subtitles in 1X24: Exodus 2]

SUN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: Do you want it cut in half?]

JIN: Hmm.

SUN (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: Here you go.]

(She puts the plate of food in front of Jin, but accidentally knocks over one of
the cups of coffee on him.)

(Jin stands up. Sun tries to dab at the liquid on him.)

SUN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: I'm so sorry!]

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: I'm all right.]

SUN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: Are you all right?]

(He doesn't appear mad at all.)

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: I'm fine.]

(He looks around, obviously for a restroom.)

JIN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: Where's the restroom?]

(Sun looks around. She points.)

SUN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled) [Translated: It's over there.]

(Jin heads off in that direction.)

GINA: (loudly) My God, it's "Memoirs of a Geisha" come to life.

JEFF: Hey, volume.

(Sun sits down quietly.)

GINA: Relax. They don't speak English.

(Camera holds on Sun.)

CUE SOUND: (PRE-LAP) HAMMERING

CUT TO:END OF SUN'S FLASHBACKRESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Sun is clutching a book in her hands as she approaches Jin at the raft. He's
hammering on the sheet of metal they're using for the rudder.)

(She stops near him and waits for him to notice her. Jin stops hammering, wipes
his brow, turns and sees Sun.)

(Without saying a word, he turns and walks past her.)

(Sun grabs his arm and stops him, forcing him to acknowledge her.)

SUN: (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

(Jin looks at Sun. She holds out the small booklet to him.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: This is for you.]

(He takes the booklet and opens it. It's in Korean. He reads it and we realize
that it's a Korean-English dictionary for him.)

JIN: (in English) S-star -- starboard.

SUN: (in English) Starboard.

(Jin continues to look at the booklet.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: It's a list of simple English words spelled out
phonetically ... I thought this would help you so I made it for you.

(Jin starts to cry. He swallows and looks at Sun, regret for everything past
and present etched in his face.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: I'm sorry.]

SUN: (whispers) (in Korean) [subtitled: I am too.]

(Jin sniffles.)

SUN: (crying) (in Korean) [subtitled: You don't have to go.]

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: No, don't you understand, Sun? (voice breaks)
I'm in this place because I'm being punished. I made you suffer ... ]

(He reaches out and caresses her cheek with the back of his fingers.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: You don't deserve any of this.]

(She closes her eyes and clutches his hand with hers.)

SUN: (whispers) (in Korean) (unsubtitled)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: I have to go because I'm going to save you.]

(Sun looks at Jin as tears fall down his cheeks. He instructs her.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Stay with Jack. He'll keep you safe.]

(But she's more concerned for him.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Who will keep you safe?]

(Jin grabs her and holds onto her as she cries. Sun holds onto him, clutching
him to her as if she'll never see him again.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: I love you. I love you.]JIN: (in Korean)
[subtitled: I'm so sorry.]

(They pull back and Sun looks at Jin, hoping that he sees the forgiveness in her
eyes.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: It's okay.]

(And they kiss.)
