[Scene from 1X10: Raised by Another]
[Voice Over from 1X11: All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues]

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY]

(Ethan stands a distance away from Charlie and Claire. He stares at Claire.)

(Not liking how Ethan's looking at Claire, Charlie puts his arm protectively
around Claire's shoulders.)

JACK: (v.o.) Has anyone seen Ethan?

(Ethan continues to stare at Claire.)

MICHAEL: (v.o.) Yeah, yeah, he took off on the path to the beach.

(Camera holds on Claire's terrified look.)

[Scenes from 1X11: All the Best Cowboys have Daddy Issues]

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Locke kneels close to the ground reading the signs in the dirt.)

LOCKE: Looks like there might have been a struggle.

(Cut to: He looks around.)

LOCKE: I think they could've been taken.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN.

[EXT. MUDDY JUNGLE CLEARING -- DAY]

(Jack and Ethan fight in the pouring rain.)

(Jack grabs Ethan's foot and pushes him off and away from him. Ethan falls
backward into the muddy puddle. He quickly gets to his feet. Jack scrambles to
his feet and swings at Ethan. Ethan gets up and punches Jack in the stomach and
in the face.)

(He waits. Jack gets up and swings again. He misses. Ethan punches Jack in
the stomach. Jack doubles over and falls to his knees.)

(He kicks Jack in the face. Jack falls backward into the water.)

CUT TO:

(Jack falls backward into the mud with a thud.)

(He flips over, turns and sees Ethan standing right over him. Ethan presses a
sneakered foot firmly in the center of Jack's chest.)

(Jack groans.)

(Ethan leans down.)

ETHAN: If you do not stop following me, I will kill one of them.

(Jack groans.)

FADE IN.

[INT. CAVES -- NIGHT]

(CU: Charlie's eyes are closed. He's sleeping ... or at least trying to.)

LOCKE: (o.s.) Over here! Jack!

VOICE (MAN): (o.s.) Hey!

LOCKE: (o.s.) Where's Jack?

(There's a commotion going on. He can hear people scrambling around in the
caves. Charlie's eyes flutter open.)

LOCKE: (o.s.) We need the doctor!

VOICE (MAN): He's right there! Right there.

(Charlie wakes up and turns to see the others rushing over to the mouth of the
caves to see what's going on.)

CHARLIE: What happened?

(Charlie gets up just as Locke enters the cave with Claire in his arms. She's
unconscious.)

WALT: Jack!

LOCKE: Doctor!

(Locke heads into the caves. Charlie heads over toward them. The others follow
just as concerned for her.)

CHARLIE: Claire!

MICHAEL: Is she alive?

WALT: What happened?

(Charlie takes a step closer to Claire.)

CHARLIE: Is she all right?

(Jack pulls Charlie back and steps up to Locke.)

JACK: Let me have her. It's okay.

(He takes Claire from Locke. They turn and Jack carries Claire into the
infirmary area of the caves. Locke is right behind Jack answering his
questions.)

JACK: Where did you find her?

LOCKE: About a mile north. We were looking for the dog.

JACK: Was she conscious?

LOCKE: She collapsed in my arms.

(Jack puts Claire down on the ground.)

CHARLIE: Did she say anything?

HURLEY: Charlie, man, is she injured?

(Jack takes a moment and checks Claire's pulse. After a moment, he turns and
gets a bottle of water.)

WALT: Is she all right?

JACK: Everybody needs to back off, okay? Just give her some air.

(Everyone, except Charlie, steps back a short distance from them. Jack kneels
down next to Claire with the water bottle. Charlie leans over next to him.)

(Jack has a wet cloth and dabs Claire's forehead.)

JACK: (gently) Claire, can you hear me? Wake up now. Hey, Claire. Claire.

(Claire starts to stir; her eyes are closed.)

JACK: Wake up now.

(Claire opens her eyes and looks at Jack.)

JACK: (smiles) Hey.

(Claire screams and scrambles back, away from them.)

CLAIRE: Aah!

JACK: It's okay.
JACK: Claire. Hey, it's okay. It's okay.

(Charlie steps forward.)

CHARLIE: (soothing) Claire. You're okay. You're safe.

(Scared, Claire stares at Charlie.)

CLAIRE: Who are you?

(Charlie's eyes widen. He doesn't move. Claire looks around at the other
unfamiliar faces in the cave - Boone, Jin and Sun, Walt, Hurley - no one looks
familiar to her.)

CLAIRE: (screams) Who are you?!

(Charlie turns and looks back at Jack who is just as lost as everyone else at
Claire's behavior.)

CLAIRE: (crying) Who are you people?!

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. CAVE ENTRANCE (STOCK) - NIGHT]

CLAIRE: (v.o.) I-I don't understand.

[INT. CAVES -- NIGHT]

(Claire talks with Jack. Charlie stands nearby listening.)

CLAIRE: (she looks around and shakes her head) I don't know any Ethan. Um ...
I don't -- I don't remember. I don't remember any of you. I don't remember any
of this.

(Charlie kneels down in front of Claire.)

CHARLIE: What do you remember?

(As she answers, Locke sits near the cave wall listening.)

CLAIRE: Um, I -- I was on a plane. Um, f-flying to L.A. from Sydney.

(Claire looks at them. After a moment, Jack explains.)

JACK: Claire ... we were all on that plane. It crashed here, on this island.

(Claire looks at him with disbelief.)

JACK: That was almost a month ago.

(Claire takes a breath and looks down at her tummy.)

CLAIRE: No. I-I'm due in --

JACK: (reassuring) Your baby's fine. He's kicking. Everything's normal.
Okay?

CLAIRE: Well, if it's been almost a month, then why hasn't somebody come to get
us?

(Jack can't answer that. He looks over at Locke. Claire immediately follows
his gaze and turns to look at Locke. Locke can't answer that.)

(Claire turns and looks at Charlie who doesn't say anything either. It's
something no one can answer.)

CUT TO:

[SUN AND JIN]

(Sun and Jin stand side-by-side in the caves watching from a distance.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: What do you think is going on?]

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: I don't know.]

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Is she all right?]

(He turns and looks at Sun.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: The girl?]

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Yes, I think so.]

(They both turn and look at the others on the other side of the cave.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: And the baby?]

(Sun glances at Jin. She turns and looks across the cave.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: I'm sure the baby is fine.]

(Jin turns and looks at Sun. She doesn't look at him. He goes back to looking
across the cave.)

CUT TO:

[LOCKE AND BOONE]

(Locke sits quietly in front of the small campfire. He's staring at the burning
flames, lost in his own thoughts.)

BOONE: You think she escaped?

(Boone turns and looks over at Locke.)

LOCKE: You were right beside me, Boone. You know as much as I do.

BOONE: Where'd she come from? I mean, we were out pretty deep. Nothing's out
there.

(Locke looks at Boone.)

BOONE: She didn't say anything at all about Ethan?

LOCKE: Apparently, she doesn't even remember Ethan.

BOONE: The guy pretends to be one of us. He drags her to the jungle for almost
two weeks. She doesn't remember him?

(Again, Locke's eyes shift over from the fire to Boone.)

LOCKE: Apparently.

(Boone steps away from the warmth and light of the campfire and turns and stares
at the jungle darkness.)

BOONE: You think he's around?

(Locke turns and looks at Boone.)

LOCKE: I sure hope not.

CUT TO:

[CHARLIE AND CLAIRE]

(Charlie holds out Claire's journal.)

CHARLIE: Claire. Here's your journal. (She takes it from him.) It might
help.

(Charlie climbs up onto the rock seat next to Claire and sits down.)

CHARLIE: And this is where you sleep. It's quite cozy, isn't it?

(Claire nods and smiles uncomfortably. The two lapse into silence.)

CHARLIE: When he -- Ethan -- when he took you away ... he took me, too. The
others came after us. They got me back, but you -- you were gone.

CLAIRE: Who is he -- Ethan?

CHARLIE: Ethan ... Ethan's the bad guy.

CLAIRE: So we were together when ...

(Charlie looks away.)

CHARLIE: Yeah.

CLAIRE: Why did he leave you?

(Charlie changes the subject as he looks around for the jar of water.)

CHARLIE: Why don't we leave that lovely story for the morning? You've had
enough for one day.

(He hands the water to Claire.)

CLAIRE: I won't be sleeping.

CHARLIE: Oh. Lucky for me. Not much a sleeper myself. Finally, I'll have
someone to stay up with.

CLAIRE: We-we're friends?

(Charlie looks directly at Claire.)

CHARLIE: (nods) Yeah. Yeah, we're friends.

(Claire nods, but it's apparent that she doesn't remember. Charlie looks at
her.)

CUE SOUND: (PRE-LAP) SNIFFING, SNORTING

(Claire takes a drink of water.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. ALLEYWAY -- NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Tommy puts a hand on Charlie's shoulder.)

TOMMY: How's that feel, mate?

CHARLIE: Sodding fantastic.

TOMMY: Good, 'cause, uh, we're almost out.

(Tommy shows the small bag of stuff to Charlie.)

CHARLIE: (cheerfully) But we're not out yet. Carpe diem, my friend.

TOMMY: Look, save your French for someone who appreciates it.

CHARLIE: (smiles) Latin, Tommy. It's Latin.

(Charlie walks around the grating in the alleyway. He and Tommy walk out of the
alley.)

TOMMY: Well, is it Latin for "I've got a pile of money so we can score vast
quantities of illicit substances"?

CHARLIE: No.

TOMMY: Suppose you ought to clean up, then. It's time to put you to work.

(Tommy steps away from Charlie leaving him puzzled as to what he has planned.)

(Camera pulls back and we see that he's in London.)

(After a beat, Charlie walks out of camera frame to follow Tommy.)

(In the background, a train passes by.)

CUT TO:

[INT. BAR -- NIGHT - FLASHBACK -- CONTINUOUS]

(An attractive woman is in the bar smiling. Rock music plays in the background
of the bar Charlie and Tommy are in. They both sit at the bar counter nursing
their glasses of beer. They watch Lucy as Tommy narrates.)

TOMMY: Miss Lucy Heatherton, 22 and ripe in oh so many wonderful ways. Just
graduated from Oxford and lives in Knightsbridge with her dear old dad Mr.
Francis Price Heatherton, who, my friend, is bloody loaded.

(Charlie watches Lucy.)

CHARLIE: How you amass this information never ceases to amaze me, Tommy.

TOMMY: Ready to fall in love, Mr. Charlie Pace of the legendary rock band
'Drive Shaft'?

(Tommy holds out a coin. Charlie looks over at Lucy Heatherton who is smiling
with her friends.)

CHARLIE: Absolutely.

(The song on the jukebox ends. Charlie downs the contents of his shot glass.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

(CU: A coin is put into the jukebox. Camera slides over to show the DRIVE
SHAFT album cover.)

(Tommy makes his selection: 1-3-4.)

(Camera pulls down to the jukebox label. We see:

133 - "NO MORE "I LOVE YOU'S"
ANNIE LENNOX
233 - "LADIES OF THE CANYON"

134 - "You All Everybody"
DRIVE SHAFT
234 - DRIVE SHAFT

135 - "YOU GOT IT"
BONNIE RAITT
235 - "FEELING OF FALLING"

(Tommy sits back down at a table while the song "You All Everybody" starts
playing on the jukebox.)

(Charlie, meanwhile, is at Lucy Heatherton's table with her friends.)

CHARLIE: Oh, seriously, ladies, I demand you stop buying me more drinks. (He
takes a sip of his drink. Lucy giggles.) I'm a man of high moral standing.
Your obvious plan to take me home and ravish me will not work.

(The women laugh.)

CHARLIE: (mutters) Saucy sirens. I believe in monogamy. I will not be shared
like a common curry.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Are we that obvious?

CHARLIE: Dreadfully. Call yourself ladies? Jane Austen would be ashamed.

(Lucy giggles, charmed. Across the room, Tommy watches Charlie with the women.
The sign hanging on the far wall behind Lucy reads, Mineral Water. The
background music gets louder as the conversation fades.)

LYRICS: (b.g.)
You all everybody / you all everybody

CHARLIE: (fading in b.g.) I personally feel very *** ***. I'm sensitive. I'm
not just being --

RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. OCEAN (STOCK) - DAY - PRESENT]

(The waves crash against the rocks.)

[EXT. BEACH -- DAY -- PRESENT]

(Locke, Sayid, Jack and Charlie discuss Claire.)

SAYID: The girl is pregnant -- very pregnant. Are we supposed to believe that
she escaped from him?

CHARLIE: What are you getting at?

SAYID: Ethan infiltrated us. Whoever he is and wherever he comes from, he's
intelligent. Who's to say he didn't even send Claire?

CHARLIE: (angry) You're off your head, mate --

JACK: (warns) Charlie, calm down. That's a stretch, Sayid.

SAYID: Then tell me, doctor, how many times have you diagnosed actual amnesia,
and such a selective brand of it?

JACK: Okay, it's rare, but she's been through a major trauma. It is possible
that her memory reset to the crash.

LOCKE: And the chances of that memory returning?

JACK: (shakes his head) I don't know.

(Charlie has had enough.)

CHARLIE: You know what? You boys talk about Claire all you want. I'm actually
going to go spend some time with her. I get the impression she might still be a
tad upset.

(Charlie leaves. They watch him go. Sayid turns and looks at Jack.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. GRASSY AREA TO CAVES - DAY]

(On his way back to the caves, Charlie comes upon Jin carrying his nets around
his shoulders.)

CHARLIE: Oy, Jin!

(At the sound of his name, Jin stops and turns. Charlie catches up with him.
They walk back together.)

CHARLIE: Are you heading back to the caves? Annyong.

JIN: (nods and smiles) Annyong. (He chuckles.)

CHARLIE: Safety in numbers, right? Of course ... you have no idea what I'm
talking about.

(Jin continues to walk as Charlie rambles.)

CHARLIE: How nice it must be to not be involved in the bloody insanity that
surrounds us at every turn. (Jin looks at Charlie.) It's quite beautiful,
really. You take care of your wife, everything else is someone else's problem.
No need to be involved in the decision-making process. No tree-shaking
behemoths, french transmissions, just sweet bloody ignorance.

(Jin hears something - a loud, whooshing sound. He stops and looks around.
Charlie continues to ramble.)

CHARLIE: You don't know how lucky you are, you know? Must be nice. You wake up
and --

(The rhythmic whooshing gets louder and faster. Jin puts a hand up and stops
Charlie from talking as he listens to the strange sound.)

(Jin looks around and doesn't see anything. The whooshing sound gets faster and
faster. This can't be good.)

CHARLIE: What?

(Jin and Charlie look around. The whooshing sound gets impossibly faster.
Suddenly, it stops. The stone is released, comes out of nowhere, and hits Jin
in the chest.)

JIN: Oof!

(Jin falls to the ground unconscious. Charlie looks down at Jin and suddenly
realizes that he's alone. He looks around and doesn't see anyone. He turns
back and finds Ethan walking calmly up the path toward him. In his hand, he's
carrying a slingshot.)

ETHAN: Charlie, I want her back.

(Charlie takes a step back.)

CHARLIE: What? I --

ETHAN: I want you to bring her back.

(On Ethan's left cheek, there are dried bloodied fingernail scratches. Ethan
continues to walk toward Charlie. He backs away from him.)

CHARLIE: What did you do to her?

(Charlie looks down, sees a stick, picks up the stick and charges at Ethan. He
raises the stick to hit Ethan.)

CHARLIE: (shouts) What did you do?!

(But Ethan calmly grabs Charlie's wrist, keeping him from hitting anything.
With his other hand, Ethan grabs Charlie by his neck. He pushes Charlie back
and slams him up against the nearby tree. Charlie starts choking.)

(With his strength, Ethan lifts Charlie up, his feet dangling several inches
above the ground.)

(Charlie chokes.)

ETHAN: You bring her here. (coldly) If you don't, I'm going to kill one of
them, and then if you don't bring her back before sundown tomorrow, I'll kill
another ... and another ...

(Charlie's feet dangle above ground.)

ETHAN: ... and another. One every day. And Charlie ...

(Ethan puts Charlie back down on the ground, but he doesn't release his hold on
Charlie's neck.)

ETHAN: ... I'll kill you last.

(Ethan releases Charlie who crumples to the ground. Ethan backs away. Charlie
looks down and coughs.)

(When he looks up again, Ethan is gone.)

(Camera holds on Charlie.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH -- DAY]

(We enter mid-discussion with Charlie, Jack and Locke.)

CHARLIE: (incredulous) What do we do? We go out, and we bloody kill him.

LOCKE: Calm down, Charlie. We don't want the others to get upset.

CHARLIE: No, forget the others. He's out there right now, Locke.

JACK: I think he's right. A man threatens to kill one of us unless we bring
him Claire, and, what, we just wait for that to happen? We tracked him once
before. We can track him again.

LOCKE: (to Jack) You both seem to have forgotten how that turned out. He
bested you physically. (to Charlie) He hung you from a tree. Running into the
jungle unarmed is not going to get the job done.

CHARLIE: So what does get it done?

LOCKE: We circle the wagons, tell a select few about the threat. We post them
as sentries here and back at the caves.

JACK: "Tell a select few"? He does what he says he's going to do, and that
blood's on our hands.

(Locke stops and thinks about it.)

LOCKE: Okay, Jack, we tell everyone. But you want to protect them, you need to
start thinking defense.

JACK: We move everybody off the beach back up into the caves.

LOCKE: What if Ethan isn't alone? What if he delivered his threat so that we
would gather like sheep to the slaughter in a confined space where they can roll
in and take us all in one fell swoop?

(Jack nods.)

JACK: Okay, John. I mean, obviously, you have a plan, so ... let's hear it.

(Camera holds on Locke.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. CAVES -- DAY]

(Sun tends to Jin's wound, dabbing at the injury with a wet cloth.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: What do you think is going on?]

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: What's going on? (He looks at her.) How would I
know?]

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Maybe the others understand -- ]

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: (interrupts) The others? I was attacked because
of what they have done.]

(Sun doesn't say anything. Jin falls silent.)

CLAIRE: (v.o.) The others are avoiding me.

CUT TO:

[EXT. CAVES -- DAY]

(Claire and Charlie sit on the ground.)

CHARLIE: Sorry?

CLAIRE: No one will talk to me. You know, it just feels like something's going
on.

(Charlie looks away and changes the subject.)

CHARLIE: Anything coming back?

CLAIRE: (shakes her head) After the crash, no. Some of this stuff's probably
better forgotten, anyway.

(She looks at her journal in her hand.)

CHARLIE: Well, I don't know about you, but the rest of us have been having a
wonderful time. We even built a golf course.

(She chuckles. After a moment, she turns and looks at Charlie.)

CLAIRE: You-- you're sure there's nothing going on.

(He swallows, looks at her, and lies.)

CHARLIE: Absolutely.

CLAIRE: (nods) Okay.

(Charlie looks away as he remembers.)

CUT TO:

[INT. HEATHERTON RESIDENCE -- FLASHBACK]

(The door opens. Lucy leads Charlie into the residence.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: You're quite enamored of yourself, aren't you?

CHARLIE: Now, Lucy, I know it's our first date and you need to appear demure,
but, you know, if you want to invite me back for sex, don't say "tea." (Lucy
giggles.) Say "sex."

LUCY HEATHERTON: Do you want tea or not?

CHARLIE: I'd love some.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Brilliant.

(Lucy turns and leaves the room. Charlie looks around the living room at the
various items in display cases, on the tables, on the fireplace mantle, on the
side tables.)

CHARLIE: So where is the old man?

LUCY HEATHERTON: I don't know. I think he's buying some paper company up in
Slough.

CHARLIE: Oh, yeah. You two get on?

LUCY HEATHERTON: Dad's quite cool, actually. He was rather proud when I told
him I was going on a date with a bona fide rock star.

(Charlie turns and sees something that seems expensive and small enough to
pocket. His eyes land on a cigarette case on a display stand.)

(Lucy re-enters the room and notices what Charlie's looking at.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: That was Winston Churchill's. Dad collects all sorts of
rubbish from the great leaders of the empire. Hey, you should meet him.

CHARLIE: Winston? No thanks. I heard he's quite moldy.

LUCY HEATHERTON: My father. He's coming back tomorrow. You should come round
for dinner.

CHARLIE: (nods) I'd love to.

(She smiles and kisses Charlie on the cheek.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: Excellent.

CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK.
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. CAVES - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Camera pushes in on Charlie.)

CUE SOUND: (PRE-LAP) KNIFE-SHARPENING

[EXT. CAVES - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Jack is sitting in the caves sharpening a knife on a stone. Kate walks in.)

KATE: You look hungry.

(Jack looks over his shoulder at her. Kate tosses Jack an apple. He catches
it.)

JACK: (smiles) Thanks.

(Kate removes her knapsack and sits down near Jack.)

KATE: Locke told us what happened. (Jack cuts a piece of apple and pops it
into his mouth.) Why do you think he wants her back?

JACK: (shakes his head) I don't know.

KATE: (slowly) Maybe it's time you use that key you've been wearing around
your neck. There are four 9-millimeters in The Marshal's case --

JACK: (shakes his head) Unh-unh. No. I hand them out, someone hears something
out in the jungle, gets scared, the chances of us shooting each other are much
higher than of us shooting him.

KATE: We're beyond sharpening knives here, Jack.

JACK: I'm not putting guns in untrained hands.

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY]

(Locke checks the wire tied around the tree. He steps aside.)

LOCKE: (shouts) Trip it!

(Behind him, Boone uses a stick and trips the wire they've set up. The tripped
wire sets the trap off and a large trash bag filled with trash falls from above.
It hits the ground.)

(Sayid steps into view.)

SAYID: Not bad.

LOCKE: Four of these around the perimeter will do the job.

SAYID: I have fires prepared at twenty-meter intervals.

LOCKE: (nods) Excellent.

SAYID: Some of the men have volunteered for sentry duty. I'm going to put them
on rotating shifts.

BOONE: (offers) I'll take a shift.

(Sayid looks at Boone and nods.)

SAYID: O-kay.

(Boone nods.)

LOCKE: Absolutely. We're counting on you, Boone.

(Camera holds on Boone.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. OCEAN (STOCK) - SUNSET]

(The sky darkens as sunset nears.)

[EXT. CAVES - EVENING]

(Jack walks into the caves, Charlie is right behind him. Jack is lighting the
torches around the area.)

CHARLIE: Maybe we should move her.

JACK: She's safer here.

CHARLIE: What about the mountain? There could be another cave.

JACK: She's safer here, Charlie.

CHARLIE: (loud) Nobody's safe!

(Jack turns around to look at Charlie, his eyes dart back to see if anyone heard
Charlie's outburst.)

JACK: Hey.

CHARLIE: It was my fault he took her. I-I was responsible. I-I should have
taken care of her. I should have --

(Jack puts a hand on Charlie's shoulder.)

JACK: Charlie. Nothing's going to happen to her. Okay?

(Jack looks at Charlie.)

CHARLIE: Yeah, okay.

(Satisfied, Jack nods. He turns and continues down the path leaving Charlie
alone.)

(Charlie turns and sees Claire on the side sleeping on the ground.)

(He looks back and remembers.)

FRANCIS "FRANK" HEATHERTON: (v.o.) Well, Charlie, I think my lovely daughter
would agree ...

CUT TO:

[INT. HEATHERTON RESIDENCE - DINING ROOM -- NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Charlie is having dinner with Lucy and her father, Frank.)

FRANCIS "FRANK" HEATHERTON: ... that you're the most impressive person who's
ever had dinner with us.

(Charlie looks at Lucy.)

CHARLIE: My condolences, sir.

FRANCIS "FRANK" HEATHERTON: I don't know if Lucy mentioned it to you, but I was
in a band once myself, you know.

CHARLIE: Oh.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Mm. They were called 'The Protestant Reformation'.

FRANCIS "FRANK" HEATHERTON: Yes -- ouch. Dreadful, huh?

CHARLIE: You gave it up, then?

FRANCIS "FRANK" HEATHERTON: Well, I was married, and Lucy was on the way. Her
mum, god rest her soul, wanted me to keep trying, but I was wanting to be more
practical. Responsible, I guess. A man has to provide, take care of his
family. A man has to think about the future.

LUCY HEATHERTON: And, of course, your band was bloody awful.

FRANCIS "FRANK" HEATHERTON: Yes, there was that, too. Small detail. So, are
you working on a new album, Charlie?

CHARLIE: We're in a bit of a hiatus right now. (They look at him and he
continues.) Liam, my brother, had a daughter, so, you know, we're ... taking
some time off. Quite a lot of time off, actually. It's been a year since we
were together. I'm thinking of doing a solo project. Liam and I don't exactly
keep in touch, and there's been some problems with ... royalties. (quietly,
uncomfortably) The fact of the matter is, sir, uh ... I think that 'Drive
Shaft' might be dead.

(Charlie looks at Frank and smiles wryly.)

TOMMY: (v.o.) You took a sodding what?

CUT TO:

[EXT. BAR - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Charlie and Tommy meet at the bar.)

CHARLIE: A job, Tommy.

(Charlie takes a sip from his glass.)

TOMMY: A job doing what?

CHARLIE: Selling copiers.

TOMMY: You took a job selling copiers.

CHARLIE: I like her.

TOMMY: She's a moose.

CHARLIE: Don't say that.

TOMMY: Are you off your bleeding chump, man? I've been getting you off on my
scag for over a week now on spec. Spec means speculation.

CHARLIE: Yes, I know what speculation means.

TOMMY: In this case, the speculation that you'll execute your end of the plan
and steal something of value which I can, in turn, sell.

CHARLIE: Shh.

TOMMY: And by the time the poor hopeless bird realizes it's missing, it never
even occurs to her that rock star Charlie "bloody" Pace could be responsible for
such larceny, and the bloody party continues.

CHARLIE: (sighs) Look, I -- I don't think Liam's coming back. I have to think
about my future.

TOMMY: Your future.

CHARLIE: Yeah.

TOMMY: Really.

CHARLIE: Yes.

TOMMY: When do you start this job?

CHARLIE: Monday.

TOMMY: Well, today's Friday, isn't it? After a weekend without a fix, Monday
should be bloody wonderful. Let's see how the future treats you then, eh,
Charlie?

(Angry with him, Tommy gets up and leaves Charlie at the bar.)

END OF FLASHBACK
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - NIGHT -- PRESENT]

(At the beach campsite, everyone remains alert. Fires are lit and torches burn
to light the area.)

(Boone sits at his post, a long pointed spear in his hand.)

(Locke walks around the area looking around, a thick stick clutched in his
hands.)

[EXT. BEACH - NIGHT]

(Open on the ocean waves hitting the shore. Camera moves over and we see Sayid
standing guard. He's extremely still, watching and listening.)

[BOONE]

(Boone sits at his post still clutching the pointy stick in his hand. He can
barely keep his eyes open. He takes a deep breath trying to stay awake. The
crackling sounds of the fire burning provides little help.)

(Boone starts to fall asleep.)

(His eyes flutter closed.)

HARD CUT TO:

[MORNING]

(The trash bag falls to the ground near Boone. The sound wakes him up.)

(Boone looks around and realizes that it's morning.)

(Boone jumps to his feet and starts running through the tall grass, his pointy
stick in his hand.)

(He stops and looks around.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. JUNGLE -- MORNING]

(We continue where we left off. Boone stands in the tall grass looking around.
He clutches the pointed stick in his hand. He looks around him and hears
movement in the tall grass.)

(He turns this way and that to find where the sounds are coming from. He stops,
raises the stick and starts running toward the sound.)

(Boone trips and falls to the ground.)

(He looks up and hears people approaching.)

LOCKE: (o.s.) Over here!

(Boone looks up and sees Vincent running through the tall grass toward him.)

LOCKE: (o.s.) Number three line! Something tripped the alarm!

(Locke and Sayid clear the tall grass. Locke continues to run, but stops when
he sees Sayid has stopped and isn't running anymore. In fact, Sayid is staring
at Boone, who is on the ground while Vincent licks his face.)

(Boone sits up.)

SAYID: (deadpans) I think we found another missing castaway.

(Off screen, a woman screams.)

(Immediately, Sayid and Locke turn and head for the beach.)

(Boone gets up to follow.)

[EXT. BEACH - DAY - CONTINUOUS]

(Sayid and Locke run onto the beach and find a small crowd gathered around a
dead body.)

(Boone breaks through the grass and follows them onto the beach.)

BOONE: What happened?

SAYID: Is he alive?

(Sayid stops and kneels down next to the body. He flips the body over. The
dead man is definitely one of their own.)

BOONE: Oh, god.

SAYID: How did he get past us?

(Boone kneels down next to the body and checks for a pulse.)

(Sayid sits back on his heels as he thinks about it. Locke looks up and also
considers the question. Right in front of them is the answer: The ocean waves
crash against the beach rocks.)

(Even Boone, who is checking on the dead man, arrives at the same answer. He
turns and looks toward the ocean.)

(The answer is clear to everyone there.)

(Sayid looks up.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

(Charlie stares coldly in front of him. Behind him, Hurley rambles to Kate.)

HURLEY: I thought those guys had the full-on perimeter set up.

KATE: Locke said it didn't matter. He came in from the water.

(Locke, Boone and Sayid carry the dead body wrapped in a blanket back to the
main part of the beach.)

HURLEY: You sure it wasn't an accident? I mean, maybe the guy just drowned or
something.

KATE: His neck was broken, both his arms, all the bones in his fingers --

HURLEY: (interrupts) Yeah, okay. Got it.

(Sawyer walks up behind Kate and Hurley. Charlie and Hurley turn, their eyes
following the body across the beach.)

SAWYER: Guess old Steve drew the short straw.

HURLEY: Dude, that was Scott.

(Hurley leaves.)

(Sawyer walks away.)

(Camera lingers on Kate, her arms wrapped around herself.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING -- DAY]

(A small crowd gathers around the new grave, a small cross made of sticks at the
top of the mound for a marker. Hurley leads the small group as he reads from
his notes.)

HURLEY: Scott Jackson worked for an internet company in Santa Cruz. He won a
sales prize - two-week Australian vacation, all expenses paid. He was a good
guy. (to the grave) Sorry I kept calling you Steve, man. Um ... (awkwardly)
... amen, I guess.

WOMAN: (o.s.) Amen.

HURLEY: I don't know how to end these.

CUT TO:

[EXT. CAVE -- DAY]

(Back at the caves, a couple sits with their arms around each other. The man
looks up and stares almost accusingly at Claire as she heads into the cave.)

(She heads over to the water. A woman filling her bottle stops, stares at
Claire, and turns away in an avoiding movement as she approaches.)

(Claire looks around definitely noticing that people are staring at her.)

(She looks around and sees Shannon staring at her. Shannon quickly looks away.
Claire heads over to Shannon.)

CLAIRE: Hi. Um ... why is everyone staring at me?

SHANNON: I'm not staring at you.

CLAIRE: What's your name?

SHANNON: Shannon.

CLAIRE: Shannon, you're staring.

(Shannon looks at Claire.)

SHANNON: You mean nobody's told you?

CLAIRE: Told me what?

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Charlie, Jack and a group of the others head back to the caves.)

CLAIRE: (o.s.) Why?!

(Charlie looks up and sees Claire storming toward him.)

CLAIRE: (accusing) Why did you lie to me?!

CHARLIE: Okay, look --

CLAIRE: (interrupts) Yeah, what else didn't you tell me?!

CHARLIE: I-I just thought with your memory, there wasn't anything that you
could do.

CLAIRE: Nothing I could do. Why would you keep me in the dark, Charlie? I'm
already in the dark.

CHARLIE: Sorry. I just wanted to take care of you.

CLAIRE: I can take care of myself.

(Claire turns and walks away.)

(Camera holds on Charlie.)

CUT TO:

[INT. HEATHERTON RESIDENCE - LIVING ROOM - (MONDAY) DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(Charlie stands nervously in front of the mirror. He's sweating. We know it's
not just nerves, but withdrawal.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: Look at you -- Charlie Pace, respectable businessman.

(Lucy walks into the room.)

CHARLIE: You didn't have to buy me this suit, Luce.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Mm-hmm. And what did you intend on wearing for your first day
of work?

(She fixes his tie and smiles at him.)

CHARLIE: I have shirts ... with buttons.

LUCY HEATHERTON: You okay?

CHARLIE: Yeah, it's --I'm nervous.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Don't be. Dad's put the fix in. He's already demanded they
buy two copiers to boost your confidence.

CHARLIE: (smiles) Ah.

(Lucy walks away from him. Charlie looks up and sees the cigarette case on the
display stand on the table. Her voice sounds far-away as he stares at the small
case.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: Have you memorized the manual?

CHARLIE: Backwards and forwards.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Say something impressive.

CHARLIE: Ahem. (clears throat) Uh ... the Heatherton C-815 copy center
leading scan offerings combine the benefits of document capture with instant
delivery anywhere, anytime.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Anywhere?

CHARLIE: Anytime, baby.

(She giggles.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: You've been on stage in front of thousands of screaming fans.
This is just some men who want to buy a silly copy machine. You're going to do
great. I believe in you. Ooh, almost forgot. Wait here.

CHARLIE: Okay.

(Lucy hurries out of the room leaving Charlie alone with the cigarette case. He
stares at the case and walks over to the small side table. He quickly grabs the
case and tucks it into his inner jacket pocket.)

(Lucy returns.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: Right. Now, I know you'll protest, but you simply can't be
respected unless you have one of these.

(Lucy holds out a brand new briefcase. Charlie's touched.)

CHARLIE: Oh. Lucy.

LUCY HEATHERTON: You're welcome.

CHARLIE: Okay, well ... I'm going to be late. (Charlie walks over to the
door.) The bus --

LUCY HEATHERTON: The bus? Are you daft? I'm driving you.

CHARLIE: Oh, no, Lucy. I'd rather you didn't.

(Lucy puts on her jacket and gets her things.)

LUCY HEATHERTON: No arguments. You have everything you need?

(Suddenly, Charlie's not feeling very proud of himself.)

CHARLIE: Yeah.

LUCY HEATHERTON: Then let's get you to work.

(Lucy walks past Charlie on her way to the door. Charlie watches her. He
swallows, then follows her.)

CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. CAVES - DAY -- PRESENT]

(Boone is sitting and sharpening the knife on a rock. Jack walks purposefully
into the caves and stops near Locke.)

JACK: John ... want to take a walk?

(Locke follows Jack out. He glances over at Boone who notes the two leaving the
caves.)

JACK: (v.o.) What do you think happens after the sun sets tonight?

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(Jack and Locke walk out of the caves.)

LOCKE: Well, if we don't bring Claire to him ... It's rhetorical, Jack. The
same thing happens tonight happened last night.

JACK: Do you think you can track him?

(Jack is walking in a specific direction, leading Locke toward somewhere.)

LOCKE: What? I'm sorry?

JACK: We know where he attacked Jin and Charlie. Do you think you can pick up
the trail?

LOCKE: Well, maybe, but I wouldn't.

JACK: You wouldn't?

(Jack stops and turns to look at Locke. He shakes his head, clearly not
understanding what Locke means.)

LOCKE: Jack, I'm not a cold man. I feel for the loss of one of our own, but
nothing fundamental has changed. Whoever he is, wherever he comes from, we are
on Ethan's turf. He has the advantage. To him, we're nothing more than a bunch
of ... scared idiots with sharp sticks.

JACK: What if I told you that I had a way to get the advantage back?

LOCKE: Then I would ask, "What way might that be, Jack?"

(Jack reaches for the key around his neck. He unties the string that holds it
there. He turns and continues to walk away from the caves.)

(Locke pauses a moment, then follows.)

CUT TO:

(Jack reaches a spot near a large rock and tree. He digs into the tall grass
growing at the base of the tree and takes out the Halliburton case.)

(Suddenly, Locke realizes that this could be it. He looks up and around to make
sure that they're not being watched. His guard is up.)

(Jack sets the case down and quickly uses the key. He glances up to make sure
that no one is watching.)

(He opens the case to show Locke the guns and ammunition.)

LOCKE: Why, doctor, you've been holding out on us.

(Jack takes a gun and stands up.)

JACK: I'm guessing you know how to handle one of these.

(He holds the gun out to Locke.)

(After a moment, Locke takes it and with practiced ease, checks the cartridge,
the clip and the weight and feel of the gun in his hand.)

(Jack watches.)

(Holding the gun in his hand, Locke rests it back casually against his shoulder.
He looks at Jack and smiles.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[INT. CAVES -- DAY]

CHARLIE: Are you insane?

(Charlie looks at the others in the group - Jack, Sayid and Locke.)

JACK: It's the best chance we have, Charlie.

CHARLIE: No bloody way.

SAYID: If we want to capture Ethan, we have to ensnare him, and the only way to
do that is by giving him what he wants.

CHARLIE: You have no idea what you're talking about. This guy --he will kill
all of you. You can't protect yourself.

(Claire is standing behind Charlie.)

CLAIRE: (interrupts) Charlie. I can talk for myself.

(Charlie turns around and tries to reason with Claire.)

CHARLIE: Claire, they want to use you as bait.

CLAIRE: I don't remember Ethan. I don't remember what he did to me. But if I
can help stop him from hurting anyone else, I have to do that.

(Knowing he can't change her mind, Charlie turns and walks over to Jack.)

CHARLIE: I'm coming with you. You said there were four guns.

LOCKE: Have you ever fired a weapon, Charlie?

(Charlie doesn't say anything, but everyone sees it in his face.)

JACK: All right. We should do this. (Jack steps away.) Let's figure out a
game plan. All right, Sayid, soldier. Locke, you're the hunter.

(Locke turns away to follow Jack, leaving Charlie alone.)

CHARLIE: (v.o.) Allow me to demonstrate the awesome speed of the C-815, using
...

CUT TO:

[INT. OFFICE - CONFERENCE ROOM -- DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(Charlie is in the middle of his presentation. He stands in front of the
conference table with several potential buyers sitting around watching him. The
sample copier is set up behind him. In front of him on the table are various
papers.)

CHARLIE: ... one of your - (chuckles nervously) -- technical manuals.

(Charlie gathers some of the papers up and shows it to them. He turns and
stands in front of the copier. He turns to the man sitting at the table with a
stop watch. He winks and motions for the man to start to stop watch.)

CHARLIE: Go.

(The man starts the stop watch. Charlie presses the copier button. The copier
beeps ... and doesn't work.)

(Charlie turns to the copier and hits the button again. The copier beeps. He
hits the button again and again.)

(The copier beeps and beeps. Charlie turns to look at one of the manuals on the
table.)

CHARLIE: Not a problem. There's probably something in here ...

(Charlie's starting to panic.)

CHARLIE: Uh ...

(He presses the button again. The copier beeps. Charlie takes his jacket off
and opens the copier up.)

CHARLIE: Nothing to ... one second, one second. (to the buyers) Bear with me.

(Charlie flips through the manual.)

CHARLIE: Uh ...

(Suddenly, he gets violently sick. He covers his mouth with his hand, his eyes
wide with panic. He heaves again. Trapped, he turns, opens the copier cover
and throws up on the glass, his back to the buyers.)

CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[CHARLIE]

(Charlie rolls his head in silence.)

(Locke watches Charlie.)

LOCKE: Charlie's right.

JACK: About what?

LOCKE: We have four guns. We should have four men.

(Locke looks at Jack. Jack looks at Sayid. Although, they don't want to, they
need the help.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH -- DAY]

(Sawyer raises his eyebrows at Jack and smirks.)

SAWYER: Help? Moi?

JACK: Do you know how to handle a gun or not?

(Kate walks over to them.)

SAWYER: Well, I know at least one polar bear who seems to think so.

(Jack offers Sawyer the gun. Sawyer takes the gun and checks it. Kate watches
them.)

SAWYER: Where'd you get the hardware, Hoss?

(Jack doesn't answer the question. He puts his pack back on.)

KATE: I want to come.

JACK: Sorry, we're out of guns, and no one goes out there unarmed.

(Jack turns to leave. Sawyer stops him.)

SAWYER: How much ammo you got?

(Jack heads back.)

JACK: A hundred rounds, give or take.

SAWYER: All 9's, right? 9-millimeters? The guns?

JACK: (nods) Yeah. Why?

SAWYER: 'Cause if the lady wants to come ...

(Sawyer tucks the gun in the back of his jeans. He turns and pulls the
Marshal's gun from out of the tent. He holds it up.)

SAWYER: Lifted this off the Marshal back in the old days. (Jack glances over
at Kate.) You remember him, don't you? Surly guy, kind of square jaw? Carried
a sig-9?

JACK: Yeah, I remember you shot him ... and missed.

SAWYER: Yeah, well ... bygones. And, hell ... five guns are better than four.

(Sawyer hands the gun to Kate. She takes it and tucks it into the back of her
jeans as she looks at Jack.)

(Jack looks at Sawyer and considers that he really doesn't have a choice. He
nods. He turns and leaves.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - DAY]

(Thunder rumbles above.)

(Charlie stands against a tree. He's a distance away from them, but watches as
the group and Claire map out their plan. He watches as Sawyer checks his gun
and as Jack hands Sawyer some bullets.)

[SAYID]

(Sayid explains the plan to the group.)

SAYID: You will be surrounded at five points. Everyone will be in visual
contact with you. Make sure you stay in the area I've shown you. And remember
-- guns are a measure of the last resort. We want him alive.

[CHARLIE]

(Charlie watches as Jack hands Kate a clip.)

(Camera holds on Charlie's dark look getting darker by the moment. He watches
as the group finishes up and walks away. Jack takes up the rear with Claire.)

(They head into the jungle.)

(Camera holds on Charlie.)

FADE TO:

[EXT. CLOUDY SKY (STOCK) - DAY]

(Thunder rumbles. Dark, thick clouds gather in the sky blocking out the
sunlight.)

[EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY]

(It's raining.)

(Claire walks down the path. Alone. In the rain. She walks slowly and looks
around. Her sweater is soaked and she's cold.)

(She stops and looks around. She doesn't see anyone.)

(Thunder rumbles from above.)

(She turns to the side as the bushes rustle, but she doesn't see anything.)

(Claire takes a couple of steps. It's raining heavier now. She stops in the
middle of the path and turns around.)

[SAYID]

(Up above in one of the trees, Sayid watches her, his gun in his hand.)

[SAWYER]

(Hidden away in the bushes, Sawyer also keeps watch in the rain. He turns and
has a clear, long view of Claire on the path.)

[JACK]

(Jack is hidden behind one of the trees.)

[LOCKE]

(Locke hides behind a dark rock, his eyes glued to Claire.)

[CLAIRE]

(Claire stands shivering in the middle of the path. She hears something behind
her.)

(She turns around and sees Ethan climbing out from between a couple of trees.)

(He looks at her.)

(She screams.)

(Ethan charges toward her.)

(Claire turns and runs down the muddy path. Ethan takes off after her.)

(Claire runs.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING -- DAY]

(We continue where we left off. Ethan charges after Claire who is running from
him.)

(Jack turns the corner around the tree. He runs to intercept them, the gun in
his hand.)

(Ethan has his eyes on Claire and doesn't see Jack. Jack comes out of nowhere
tackling Ethan knocking him down to the ground. Jack's gun is thrown a short
distance away from them and lands in the wet grass.)

(Claire stops running. Jack is now fighting with Ethan, the two men in a lock
on the muddy ground.)

(Kate moves from her position.)

(Sayid climbs down from the tree.)

(Sawyer steps out from the trees.)

(Jack has Ethan on the ground. Ethan tries to get out from under Jack. He
pushes against Jack's head and chest.)

(Claire cringes as she watches.)

(Ethan stands up, his hand pushing against Jack's neck and chin. Jack has a
similar hold on Ethan.

(Jack knocks Ethan's arm away and follows it with a punch to Ethan's face.
Ethan absorbs the punch and turns getting in his own punch to Jack's face. Jack
is knocked down to his knees. He gets up and turns to face Ethan.)

(Ethan grabs Jack, charging into his waist and pushing him back against a nearby
tree.)

(Claire takes a step back as the two men fight.)

(Jack pushes Ethan back and punches him in the stomach. Ethan blocks Jack's
next punch and hits him in the face.)

(Jack turns and punches Ethan in the stomach twice followed by a third to the
face.)

(Ethan falls to the muddy ground.)

(Locke arrives and stands nearby, hunched over ready to fight.)

(Jack grabs Ethan and punches him again.)

LOCKE: Over here! Over here! Jack's got him!

(Ethan turns around. Sayid arrives.)

LOCKE: Hold your fire! Don't shoot! We want him alive!

(Jack kicks Ethan in the stomach.)

(Ethan falls back, tired. Jack leans forward and punches Ethan again in the
face.)

(Locke looks up and sees Claire clutching her stomach and leaning against a
small tree. He leaves Jack and runs to check on Claire. Jack doesn't let up.)

LOCKE: Claire! You all right?

CLAIRE: (scared) Yeah.

(Jack punches Ethan again.)

(Sawyer steps out from the bushes.)

SAWYER: (to Kate) Over here!

(He and Kate step out onto the path, their guns drawn.)

SAYID: Hey! Hold your fire!

(Sawyer steps back, holding his gun up.)

SAWYER: (to Sayid) Easy.

(Kate rushes over to Claire and holds her.)

(Jack punches Ethan again, this time he falls back against the muddy ground.
Jack pulls his fist back to punch Ethan again, but stops when he realizes that
Ethan is too exhausted to move.)

(Jack stands up.)

SAWYER: Winner by a knockout. Nice one, Doc. Now maybe somebody can tell me
who or what this son of a bitch is.

(Ethan gets up to his knees. Everyone stops and points their gun at Ethan.)

SAWYER: Unh-unh-unh, Jungle Boy. Not even for one second.

(Ethan swallows. He doesn't say anything.)

(Suddenly six shots ring out in succession. Ethan is hit square in the chest.)

(Sayid whirls around, his gun pointed at someone standing to the side.)

(Ethan falls to the ground. Dead.)

(Everyone turns. Sawyer slowly lowers his gun when he realizes who it is.
Sayid doesn't move.)

(Charlie is standing with both hands clutched around the gun, panting, his eyes
glued to Ethan.)

(Everyone is stunned.)

(From the back of the group, Jack walks over to him.)

JACK: Charlie!

(Jack stops in front of Charlie.)

(Charlie lowers his weapon.)

(The others look at Charlie.)

(Charlie glances up and looks directly at Claire. Claire turns and looks at
Ethan.)

DISSOLVE TO:

[EXT. OCEAN (STOCK) - SUNRISE]

[INT. CAVES -- MORNING]

(Hurley and Walt are sitting in the back of the cave playing backgammon.)

(Jack walks over to Charlie who sits alone, lost in his thoughts. Jack sits
down next to Charlie.)

JACK: Why did you do it, Charlie?

CHARLIE: (clearly) Because he deserved to die.

JACK: He could have told us where he came from, what he wanted with Claire, why
he even took her ...

CHARLIE: (interrupts) Do you really think he would have told us anything,
Jack?

(Jack doesn't answer him. Charlie looks at Jack.)

CHARLIE: I wasn't going to let that animal anywhere near her again. Ever.

(Their eyes meet. Jack nods. Charlie goes back to his thoughts.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. HEATHERTON RESIDENCE - FRONT PORCH -- DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(Charlie knocks on the door with the door handle. There's no answer. He pounds
on the door with his fist.)

(The door opens.)

CHARLIE: Lucy. I'm sorry. I've been having some problems. (She scoffs at
him.) If I could just explain --

LUCY HEATHERTON: Leave, Charlie.

(Lucy starts to close the door on him.)

CHARLIE: Lucy. I made a mistake.

LUCY HEATHERTON: You made a mistake. (She steps out onto the porch.) My
father's sales manager comes here to my house to return a cigarette case that
the E.M.T.s pulled from your suit pocket at the bloody hospital, and it still
smells of your sick.

CHARLIE: Lucy, I didn't mean to -

LUCY HEATHERTON: Oh, you meant to, Charlie. You meant to from the start.
You're a liar. I believed you, and you lied. I thought you wanted to ... you
said ... you selfish bastard!

(She pushes him away from her and turns back into the house.)

CHARLIE: Lucy, if I can just explain --

LUCY HEATHERTON: Just tell me one thing, and don't you dare lie to me. I get
why you pretended to like me. I understand why you stole -- because you're a
junkie. (crying) But I don't understand why you took the job. Why did you
take the job, Charlie?

(There's a long pause as Charlie tries to explain it to her.)

CHARLIE: I guess ... I ... I wanted to be respectable. I wanted you to think
that I could take care of you.

LUCY HEATHERTON: You'll never take care of anyone.

(Lucy turns and heads back into the house. She closes the door on Charlie.)

CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
RESUME TO PRESENT

[CHARLIE]

(Camera holds on Charlie.)

[EXT. CAVES - NIGHT -- PRESENT]

(Hurley walks into the cave and adjusts his headset. He glances up and sees Jin
and Sun sleeping, his arms wrapped around her.)

(Camera moves and we see Jack filling up his water bottle. He finishes, caps
the bottle and stands up.)

(Sayid and Shannon are sitting together. Shannon tends to Sayid's wounds.)

(Jack walks out of the area. He slows as he passes Charlie, glancing at him to
make sure he's all right.)

(Charlie hasn't moved. He stares out in front of him. Suddenly he turns.
Claire is walking toward him.)

CLAIRE: (offers) I remember peanut butter. (Self-consciously, she laughs a
little as she walks toward Charlie.) Why do I remember peanut butter?

(Charlie stands up and walks over to her. This pleases him. He smiles a
little.)

CHARLIE: It was imaginary peanut butter, actually.

CLAIRE: I don't know what happened to me. I'm scared. I want to trust you.

(Charlie looks at Claire.)

CLAIRE: Good night, Charlie.

CHARLIE: Good night, Claire.

(Claire turns and heads back to her sleeping spot. She turns and glances back
at Charlie.)

(Charlie watches her go, the smile vanishes from his eyes and he sighs.)

(Camera holds on Charlie.)
