FADE IN.

[EXT. MOTEL - PARKING LOT - DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(It's a beautiful day. HIGH SHOT of the cornfield landscape with clear skies in
the background.)

(A convertible drives up the road and turns into the motel's parking lot. The
blonde-haired woman driving the convertible, Nebraska license #7-C153M, parks
the car and gets out. It's important to note that we do not see her face.)

(She opens the trunk and lifts up the floor carpet to reveal nine different
license plates in two rows, five on the left, four on the right:

{left side} top to bottom
Wisconsin S-??-5??
Michigan M4? ???
{unknown} NU?-153
Ohio
Illinois (Land of Lincoln) ??? 265

{right side} top to bottom
Missouri ??? 5--
Scenic Idaho TS?--
Discover {unknown}VM? --
Explore Minnesota -- 271??? (Dec) 10,000--

(The blonde-haired woman takes out a license plate and closes the trunk. Again,
we do not see her face. She uses a screwdriver and kneels down to remove her
current license plate. In the background, two teenaged children -- a boy and a
girl - step out from the motel room, each carrying their own backpack. As they
head for the red mini-van, the girl pushes the younger boy.)

(The father, carrying two suitcases, exits the room and releases the catch on
the door, allowing it to close behind him. He heads over to the mini-van and
steps out of camera frame.)

(The housekeeper pushes her cleaning cart past the room. She parks her cleaning
cart outside the next room and takes out the keys from her pocket. She unlocks
the motel room door and slips inside. The door closes behind her.)

(The blonde-haired woman casually walks past the room and past the cleaning
cart, lifting a couple of clean towels and a couple of bottles of shampoo as she
heads for the recently vacated motel room.)

(She smoothly enters the room and flips the doorknob notice over to: PLEASE DO
NOT DISTURB.)

(The door closes behind her.)

[INT. MOTEL ROOM - DAY -- FLASHBACK -- CONTINUOUS]

(Inside the room, the blonde-haired woman removes her jacket and tosses it on
the unmade bed. She takes her black t-shirt top off and steps into the
bathroom. Again, we note that we have not seen her face.)

[INT. MOTEL ROOM - BATHROOM -- DAY -- FLASHBACK -- CONTINUOUS]

(The blonde-haired woman puts the instructions down and reaches for the bottle
of hair coloring. She starts applying it to her own hair. The box on the
counter has the number '100' down the side.)

CUT TO:

[SHOWER]

(The shower starts.)

(The water with the hair dye pools near the drain.)

(The now dark-haired woman turns around and we see that it's Kate.)

CUT TO:

[INT. FRONT DESK -- DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(Kate walks into the office and heads over to the counter. Sanjay, the clerk
behind the counter, is playing a hand-held game.)

KATE: Hi. I'm expecting a letter --hold for guest arrival.

SANJAY: Sure. What's your name?

KATE: Joan Hart.

(Sanjay takes out a BROWN SHOE shoebox full of unclaimed letters. He finds
one.)

SANJAY: Oh. Joan Hart.

(He gives her the envelope.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. PARKING LOT -- DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(CLOSE-UP of the Ohio license plate:
OHIO FEB
THE HEART OF IT ALL!
DPN 924A
SHELBY

(Kate sits in her car and reads a handwritten letter. In her right hand, she
holds some bills. The topmost bill is a 20.)

(From what is legible, the letter reads:

[ *** since my ***
*** to the chemo and the doctors
*** nothing else they can do. She's still on (as?)
*** and refuses to stay at the hospital.
*** she's growing weaker and fear that

(Kate cries.)

[EXT. BEACH - DAY -- PRESENT]

(CLOSE-UP: TOY AIRPLANE. Kate gently handles the toy airplane retrieved from
the Halliburton case. The numbers under the plane's wing read 5025.)

CHARLIE: (o.s.) Platinum.

(Kate is startled and hides the toy airplane. Charlie walks up to Kate as he
strums his guitar.)

KATE: Platinum?

(Charlie sits down next to Kate and strums his guitar.)

CHARLIE: As in platinum record. As in a million units sold. Now, Driveshaft's
albums must have spiked when everybody found out that I died in some
catastrophic plane disaster. But when I come back ... alive ... it's going to
be insane.

(Charlie starts playing.)

KATE: So you think that raft's going to work?

CHARLIE: (optimistically) Of course it'll work. Look at that thing. (He nods
toward the raft where Jin, Michael, Jack, Sawyer and others are working on it.)
That's not a raft. They built a sodding boat. And when they get picked up, the
helicopters will come, making us ridiculously and eternally famous.

(Kate doesn't respond.)

CHARLIE: What's the matter? Don't you want to be famous?

(In the background, we hear voices rising. They turn and see Leslie Arzt
heading toward the raft, trying to get Michael and Jin's attention.)

VOICE: -- can I (something) in a few weeks.

LESLIE ARZT: (shouting) It doesn't matter what I think! The fact is
(something) about this stuff!

KATE: What do you think's going on over there?

(Charlie turns and watches as Leslie Arzt addresses those working on the boat.)

[EXT. BEACH -- BOAT SITE - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

LESLIE ARZT: Sure, you can absolutely wait a few weeks before you launch. I
was just assuming you didn't want to die.

(Sawyer and Jack look at Leslie Arzt. Hurley, Michael and Walt also stop and
listen to Arzt. Michael puts a hand on Walt's head.)

MICHAEL: So, uh, when's the next time we can launch?

(Leslie Arzt looks at the ocean, then turns back to them.)

LESLIE ARZT: Three ... maybe, four months.

SAWYER: Come on. Even a weatherman on TV don't know what's going to happen.

(Kate and Charlie walk up the beach and join the group.)

SAWYER: Why are we listening to Arzt?

LESLIE ARZT: Because I'm a doctor, and you are a hillbilly.

SAWYER: You're damn high school science teacher.

JACK: Hey, Sawyer. Just let the man talk.

LESLIE ARZT: It's been raining every afternoon. That means that we are on the
cusp of monsoon season.

(Sun stands on the outskirts and looks at Jin as she listens. Jin notices Sun
standing there as he tests the wire on the boat.)

LESLIE ARZT: Monsoon season is bad.

(Leslie Arzt holds up a stick with a white cloth tied to the end of it to find
the direction the wind is blowing. He does this in the same manner as if he was
teaching class and this was a science experiment.)

LESLIE ARZT: Now, the trade winds are blowing north right now. Shipping lanes
are north, so north is exactly where you want to be.

MICHAEL: What's that mean?

LESLIE ARZT: That means when the monsoon season hits, the trade winds are going
to shift to the south. The raft goes with the wind. Can anyone tell me what is
the only piece of land that's south of us?

JACK: Antarctica.

LESLIE ARZT: That's right, Jack -- Antarctica.

MICHAEL: So when do we have to leave?

(He looks over at the ocean and shrugs back at Michael.)

LESLIE ARZT: Yesterday.

(Suddenly, their timetable has been cut extremely short. Michael turns and
looks back at Sawyer. Everyone is silent as they absorb that bit of
information.)

(Close-up on Kate as she also considers the information.)

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH -- DAY]

(Michael is walking quickly away from the site, heading back to camp. Kate
rushes to catch up with him. He's got a lot of things on his mind.)

KATE: So obviously you believe him?

MICHAEL: Arzt? I don't know, but I'm not taking any chances.

KATE: You think you'll be ready by tomorrow?

MICHAEL: The man said not a day to waste.

KATE: Supplies all set? You got food, fresh water --

MICHAEL: Look, Kate, no offense, but, uh, I got work to do. Why the sudden
interest?

KATE: Because I'm going with you.

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH -- DAY]

(We continue where we left off. Kate continues to follow Michael down the
beach.)

MICHAEL: Look, raft's full. We need four; we got four.

KATE: Including Sawyer?

MICHAEL: Including him. We needed the stuff he had, so he bought his way on.

KATE: The first raft, which burned.

MICHAEL: You know, I'm not going to get into semantics with you. I told the
guy --

KATE: He doesn't even know how to sail.

MICHAEL: And you do?

KATE: I spent two summers crewing j-boats. I know my way around a sailboat.

MICHAEL: Yeah, maybe so ... but a deal's a deal. I'm sorry.

KATE: You bringing Walt, too?

(Michael stops and turns around to look at Kate. He doesn't like what she's
implying.)

KATE: I'm just saying it's dangerous.

MICHAEL: (firmly) I decide what's best for my boy. And right now, what's best
for him is to get the hell off this island. (final) The raft's full.

(Camera holds on Kate.)

CUT TO:

[INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - DAY -- FLASHBACK]

(Kate carries a large flower arrangement through the hospital hallway.)

VOICE (WOMAN): (over p.a.) Hospital chaplain to the Neural ICU. Hospital
chaplain, please report to the Neural ICU.

(She walks up to the nurse's station.)

KATE: I have a delivery for Diane Jansen.

NURSE: Right. She just came up from ICU. She's in room 208.

(She points.)

KATE: Okay.

NURSE: It's around the corner to your right.

KATE: Thanks.

NURSE: You're welcome.

(Kate turns and walks casually down the hallway. She slows a little as she
notices the officer reading a newspaper, sitting in a chair out in the hallway
outside the door. She shifts the flower arrangement to her right arm blocking
her face from his view as she walks past him.)

(The officer glances up, but doesn't think anything of it. He goes back to his
paper. Kate walks past the door.)

(Camera holds on the officer reading the paper.)

CUT TO:

[INT. HOSPITAL PARKING GARAGE - DAY - FLASHBACK]

(The car alarm chirps. Tom Brendon heads for his car. He opens the driver's
door and slips inside. He puts his bag down and is startled by an unexpected
voice.)

KATE: Hey, Tom.

(Tom turns around.)

TOM: (surprised) Holy -- Katie. Wh-what are you doing here?

KATE: Diane's dying of cancer. Thought I owed it to her to come see her.

TOM: I heard. I'm sorry.

KATE: Yeah, me too.

TOM: So any particular reason why you're hanging out in the back of my car?

KATE: I need your help.

CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK.
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE - DAY - PRESENT]

(Jin is working on securing the wires of the mast. Sun walks up to him.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Are you going?]

(Jin doesn't say anything. He continues to tie the wire.)

SUN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Please Jin, talk to me.]

(He stops and looks at her.)

JIN: (in Korean) [subtitled: Yes, I'm going.]

(Sun doesn't say anything. She turns and leaves. Jin continues working on the
wire.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Camera slowly moves through the jungle leaves.)

JACK: (o.s.) How much further?

SAYID: (o.s.) We're almost there.

(Sayid leads Jack through the jungle.)

JACK: Want to tell me where we're going, Sayid?

SAYID: It's better that you see it for yourself.

(Jack stops walking.)

JACK: No, I'm not so sure it is. (Sayid stops and turns to look at Jack.)
Tell me why you brought me out here, or I'm going to turn around.

LOCKE: (o.s.) He brought you out here because I asked him to.

(They turn. Locke steps out from the trees. He's a distance away from them.)

LOCKE: I asked him not to tell you. I wanted you to have an open mind.

JACK: Open mind about what?

(Locke motions for them to follow him. He points into the trees near him.)

(Sayid turns and looks at Jack.)

(Sayid walks past Jack and heads over toward Locke. Jack follows.)

(Locke leads them over to the hatch.)

(Camera rises up over the entire area to show a HIGH ANGLE SHOT of the area
surrounding the hatch. It's just as we remember it - massive. A deep trench is
dug around the hatch with wide-bamboo braced inside the ditch. The cylinder is
tall and made completely of steel with no other means of getting inside exposed
in the area dug around it.)

(The hatch extends downward with no other means of getting inside exposed except
through the hatch at the top.)

(Locke walks over to the edge of the pit dug completely around the hatch. Sayid
stops a little away from it. Jack walks up to the edge and gets a good look at
it.)

(Jack can't believe what he's looking at.)

JACK: My God. What is this thing?

LOCKE: Exactly. (Jack turns and looks back at Locke.) I guess it's time we
talked about this.

(Sayid glances down at the hatch, then looks over at the two men. He remains
silent.)

(Jack turns and looks at the hatch.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Michael is dragging over a heavy piece of metal across the sand toward the boat
site. Sawyer is leaning against a nearby tree drinking water and making no move
to help Michael.)

(Sawyer caps the water bottle and tosses it back into the cooler. He walks
alongside Michael, who is still struggling as he drags the heavy piece of metal
toward the boat site. Still, Sawyer doesn't move to assist him.)

SAWYER: Yo, chief. Dumb question here. We're sailing out on the ocean, right?

MICHAEL: (irritated) You mind?

SAWYER: (points to Jin) Sulu over here is packing a suitcase full of salted
fish.

(Jin is carrying a blue igloo to the raft. Michael stops what he's doing and
looks at Sawyer.)

MICHAEL: Yeah?

SAWYER: We can't catch fish?

MICHAEL: Do you know anything about surviving at sea? Sailing? Navigating?
Steering a raft?

SAWYER: Do you?

MICHAEL: Doesn't matter what I know. I built it. Maybe you are the wrong guy
to go on the raft.

SAWYER: You gonna vote me off, Mickey? And who the hell is gonna take my
place?

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - KATE'S SHELTER - DAY]

(CLOSE-UP of a passport burning. The passport belongs to:
{photo of blonde-haired woman on left}
P
MILLER
BARBARA
01 APR / --
{on the bottom}
P MNSO12153USA--

(Camera pulls back and we find Kate burning the photo out of the passport. She
blows lightly on the hot, melting plastic.)

(Sawyer walks up to her.)

SAWYER: What the hell do you think you're doing?

(Kate looks over her shoulder and smiles at him as she casually closes and hides
the cigarette lighter.)

KATE: Sorry?

SAWYER: Don't give me the "aw, golly" eyes. Michael just told me you were
jockeying for my spot on the raft.

(Kate shakes her head a shrugs. She stands up and gets out of the shelter.)

KATE: I was just asking some questions. He must have misunderstood me.

(Sawyer grabs Kate by her arm and turns her around to face him.)

SAWYER: I know what you're doing.

KATE: Yeah?

SAWYER: Yeah. Just like I know why you wanted that Haliburton case so bad --
the one that belonged to the U.S. marshal who was flying with us? You were his
prisoner.

(Kate pulls her arm out of Sawyer's grip.)

KATE: Let go of me!

(She takes a couple of steps away from him.)

SAWYER: The only chance of running's getting on that raft, ain't it?

(Kate stops and looks back at him. Sawyer smirks at her.)

SAWYER: We get picked up by a ship, and they come back to rescue the rest of
y'all, gonna be a nice big asterisk next to your name. Don't worry, puddin'.
Your secret's safe with me. But just so you know, no way in hell you're getting
my spot on that raft.

(Kate stares at him. Sawyer turns to leave. He takes a couple of steps before
Kate stops him.)

KATE: Hey, Sawyer.

(Sawyer turns around.)

KATE: I want your spot, I'll get your spot.

(Kate turns and leaves. With a grim look on his face, Sawyer watches her go.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Michael and Jin are hard at work on the raft. Jin is tying wire around the
mast. Walt walks toward them. Michael turns and sees Walt.)

MICHAEL: Hey. Get me that water, man.

(Walt heads over to the stack of water bottles and picks up one of the water
bottles from the top of the pile. He heads over to Michael, who has climbed up
on the raft.)

WALT: Yo, Dad.

(Michael turns around. Walt tosses up the water bottle and Michael catches it.)

MICHAEL: Thanks.

(Michael uncaps the bottle and drinks. Walt takes a seat on the raft and looks
up at Michael.)

WALT: So what were you and Sawyer arguing about?

MICHAEL: Ah, I told him something he didn't want to hear.

(Michael sits down near Walt.)

WALT: Why's he want to get on the raft so much?

MICHAEL: 'Cause he knows it's gonna work.

WALT: When we get rescued, we're gonna come back for everybody else, right?

MICHAEL: (nods) Yeah, sure. Of course. But the thing is, this island ... (he
pauses) uh ... is, uh, finding it again might be hard.

WALT: Can't we fly around and look for it?

MICHAEL: (nods and takes a deep breath) Absolutely. But there's no
guarantees. That's why you and --

(Michael tries to stand up and falls to his knees.)

WALT: Dad?

(Michael holds on to the raft and stands, bent over.)

MICHAEL: Ooh. (He chuckles a little and blinks.) That's why y-
- ugh!

(Michael clutches his stomach as he's overcome by a wave of pain.)

MICHAEL: Oh!

(He falls to his knees. Walt jumps down on the sand to check on his dad.)

WALT: Dad?! (shouts) Dad?!

MICHAEL: (groans) Get Jack!

(Walt stands up and backs away, hesitant to leave Michael. Walt takes off and
runs to look for Jack, leaving Michael on his hands and knees on the sand in
pain.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. TALL GRASS NEAR BEACH -- DAY]

(Walt runs off the beach and heads inland.)

WALT: Help!

(Kate and Sun are standing nearby. Sun is holding a bottle of water. They both
turn when Walt runs up to them.)

WALT: I need help. It's my dad.

KATE: What's the matter?

WALT: His stomach is really bad.

(Sun looks alarmed. Kate takes control.)

KATE: (to Sun) Take him back to Michael. I'll go get Jack.

(Kate grabs her backpack and starts running inland. Sun looks at Walt and nods
toward the beach.)

SUN: Okay, let's go.

(Sun puts her water bottle down on the ground.)

WALT: This way.

(Walt and Sun head back to the beach.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(Kate is running through the jungle looking for Jack.)

KATE: Jack!

(She stops and looks around.)

KATE: Jack!

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE - THE HATCH -- DAY]

(Jack sits on the hatch. Sayid and Locke sit on the ground surrounding the
hatch. Sayid is quiet as he listens to the two men discuss what to do about the
hatch.)

JACK: How long have you known about this?

LOCKE: Three weeks, give or take.

JACK: Three weeks. You've been out here for three weeks digging this thing up,
and you never told me about it?

LOCKE: All due respect, Jack, but since when do I report to you?

JACK: All due respect, John, but you lied.

(Silently, Sayid turns to look from Jack to Locke.)

LOCKE: How long did you have that case full of guns before you decided the rest
of us needed to know? You used your best discretion; I used mine.

(Jack concedes the point.)

JACK: So how do we open it?

(Suddenly, Sayid perks up.)

SAYID: What? You want to open it?

JACK: Yeah.

(Jack stands up. Sayid also stands up.)

SAYID: We should bury it. I brought you here to talk him out of this insanity.
Anything could be inside.

JACK: Best-case scenario, there's supplies. Worst case, we use it as a
shelter.

SAYID: Actually, Jack, I can think of much worse cases than that. You notice
anything about this hatch? There's no handle. Could the reason for that be
more obvious? Maybe it was never meant to be opened from the outside.

(Camera holds on Locke.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. JUNGLE -- DAY]

(Locke, Jack and Sayid walk back through the jungle.)

KATE: (shouts) (o.s.) Jack!

(They look up.)

KATE: (shouts) (o.s.) Jack!

JACK: (shouts back) Yeah, over here.

(Jack walks quickly around Locke. Kate appears through the foliage and runs up
to them.)

KATE: It's Michael. Something's wrong.

(Kate turns and leads them quickly back to the beach.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE - DAY]

(Michael lies on a blanket under the nearby tree and groans as Jack checks on
him. Walt, Jin, Locke and Kate stand around them and watch.)

JACK: What'd you eat today?

(Jack stands up and gets a water bottle.)

MICHAEL: (groans) Ah ... fruit ... fish.

(Jack wets a cloth as he continues questioning Michael.)

JACK: Drinking enough water?

MICHAEL: Two, three bottles.

JACK: Where you getting that water from?

MICHAEL: The caves, like everybody else.

JACK: All right, listen, Michael -- just take it easy, okay? (Jack tucks a
damp washcloth under Michael's chin, around his neck.) You stay in the shade
and try not to move too much, okay?

(Michael tries to get up and groans. Jack stops him.)

MICHAEL: We have to launch that raft tomorrow. We have to.

JACK: I know. I know. I need you to lay back.

(Michael relaxes back against the blankets. Jack stands up and walks away.
Kate takes her backpack off and kneels down next to Michael as he tries to get
up again. Walt takes a step toward Michael, but Jin puts a hand on his shoulder
to keep him back.)

KATE: Lay down.

(Michael groans.)

KATE: Just lay down, okay?

(Walt looks on with worry. Camera holds on Kate.)

CUT TO:

[INT. TOM'S PLACE - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Open on a photo of a smiling woman and a two-year-old boy held on to the
refrigerator by small magnets. Camera moves up and we see more photos - of a
woman with a baby boy and further up of a woman with two young boys. In the
background, we hear Tom on the phone.)

TOM: (o.s.) (to phone) Hello? Hey, Adam, hey. Listen, can you carve out
some time for me on the MRI?

(Kate stands in front of the refrigerator looking at the photos.)

TOM: (to phone) Yeah, it's a favor for a friend of a friend. Oh, no, that'll
work out great. Okay. Yeah, thanks, Adam.

(She stares at the photo of Tom holding the baby boy. In the background, Tom
finishes his call and hangs up. He looks over at Kate.)

TOM: His name's Connor.

KATE: How old is he?

TOM: Twenty-two months next week.

(Kate looks at Tom and smiles.)

KATE: He's beautiful.

Yeah. Well, that's -- that's Rachel. That's not me.

(Tom walks across the kitchen to the sink. Kate sits down at the table. The
clock on the wall behind her reads: 1:50 A.M.)

KATE: Where is she?

TOM: She's over in Cedar Rapids visiting her folks. They get back on Sunday.
I got Diane in for an MRI. They'll bring her downstairs to radiology.
Appointment's not until 5:00 A.M., so we've got about three hours to kill.

KATE: Tom --

TOM: You're welcome.

(Kate leans back in her chair thinking of something else.)

KATE: You think it's still there?

TOM: What?

(She looks at him.)

KATE: You know what.

TOM: It's the middle of the night, Katie.

KATE: We might not get another chance.

TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. UNDER THE BIG TREE - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Out in the middle of the dark field is a large tree where two bulls are
grazing. A car drives up to the tree.)

(Tom parks the car. He looks at Kate, then gets out of the car, leaving the
lights on. Kate also gets out of the car. Tom takes a shovel out from the
trunk, leaving the trunk wide open.)

(Kate walks over to the nearby bush. Starting there, she starts walking toward
the tree, counting her steps as she goes.)

KATE: One, two, three, four, five ... six.

(Tom hands her a shovel and they both start digging in that particular spot.)

LOCKE: (v.o.) What do you think it is? ...

CUT TO
END OF FLASHBACK
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY -- PRESENT]

(Locke follows Jack back to the blue igloo cooler near the boat site.)

LOCKE: Heat stroke?

JACK: No, he would have felt that coming on.

LOCKE: Bad fruit, maybe? Raw fish?

JACK: Michael and Jin are on the same diet.

LOCKE: And Jin's fine.

JACK: (nods) Jin's fine.

(Jack reaches the igloo cooler and kneels down to look inside at the water
bottles. He starts picking up the empty water bottles looking at them.)

JACK: Whatever's making him sick was metabolized fast.

(He drops the first two empty water bottles on the sand near the cooler and
picks up two more empty water bottles.)

JACK: It hit him quick, and it hit him hard.

(Jack looks at the bottom of the empty water bottle in his left hand.)

LOCKE: So you think it was the water?

(Jack sees something and stands up.)

JACK: No, I don't think it was the water. (He shows Locke the white residue on
the bottom of the empty plastic bottle.) I think it was something in the water.

(Locke looks at Jack. Camera holds on Jack.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Work continues on the raft. Jack walks up to Michael.)

JACK: Feeling any better?

MICHAEL: Cramps are quieting down. (Jack reaches down to get a fresh water
bottle.) As long as I don't move or, uh ... or breathe.

(Jack chuckles. He reaches down and removes the wet towel covering Michael's
eyes.)

(In the background, we hear Hurley talking with someone. Michael looks up just
as Jack is uncapping the new water bottle.)

(Jack turns around to see what Michael's looking at. We see Hurley talking with
Locke.)

MICHAEL: Did you and Locke kiss and make up?

(As he sits up, Michael looks at Jack. Jack turns around back at Michael and
shakes his head, no.)

MICHAEL: Good.

(Michael sits up and groans. He reaches down to uncap his water bottle. Jack
stops him.)

JACK: No, Michael, unh-unh.

MICHAEL: What?

(Jack deliberately takes Michael's water bottle from him and gives him the fresh
one.)

JACK: Drink from that one.

(Michael looks at Jack.)

MICHAEL: Somebody did this to me?

JACK: I don't know. I'm not sure of anything yet.

MICHAEL: Sawyer.

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - DAY -- CONTINUOUS]

(Hurley talks with Locke.)

HURLEY: I'm on bamboo duty, but, yeah, sometimes I help refill the water.

LOCKE: Michael and Jin getting along?

(Jack joins them.)

HURLEY: Well, they fight like a married couple building a raft together.

(Locke looks at Jack.)

LOCKE: You told him?

JACK: (nods) He thinks Sawyer might have done it.

HURLEY: Oh, 'cause of Kate?

JACK: Kate?

HURLEY: Yeah, I guess she wants on the raft, so Sawyer went off on Michael
because, you know, he gets to decide who goes. Hey, you don't think Kate did
it, do you?

LOCKE: Why would Kate poison Michael?

HURLEY: Well, you know, the whole fugitive thing.

(Jack grimaces and looks down. Hurley catches Jack's reaction. Hurley turns
and looks at Locke's confusion and realizes that he's just let the cat out of
the bag. )

HURLEY: (to Jack) He doesn't know.

(Jack shakes his head.)

HURLEY: Well, how am I supposed to keep straight who knows what around here? I
mean, Steve didn't even know about the polar bear!

LOCKE: (to Jack) What did she do?

JACK: (shrugs) I don't know. Why don't you ask her?

LOCKE: And you didn't think the others should know about this, Jack?

JACK: Discretion, John.

(Locke smiles.)

CUE SOUND: (PRE-LAP) GUITAR STRUMMING

[EXT. BEACH - SHELTER -- DAY]

(Claire's baby is asleep in the crib. Charlie sits nearby playing the guitar
while Claire tries to cut his hair.)

CLAIRE: Okay, can you stop moving, or I'm gonna cut your ear off!

(Charlie stops playing for a moment, then leans forward to jot some notes down.)

CHARLIE: Ah, this is good. I'm writing again. I'm really feeling it as well.
So ... what's the first thing you're gonna do when we get rescued?

CLAIRE: You know, I ... don't really know.

CHARLIE: You can hang out with me in L.A. You and Turnip Head. You know,
until you figure things out.

CLAIRE: (smiles gratefully) Thanks.

CHARLIE: Smashing. Okay, check this out. This is Track 2. It's called -

(Charlie's moving around again. Claire grabs his head and deliberately turns
him so he's looking forward and holding still.)

CHARLIE: Sorry. It's called "Monster Eats the Pilot."

(Claire smiles and shakes her head. Charlie starts playing and Claire continues
to cut his hair.)

CUT TO:

[INT. CAVES - INFIRMARY -- DAY]

(Jack is looking through the things when Kate walks in. He opens a drawer and
takes out some things.)

KATE: How's Michael?

JACK: He's gonna be fine.

(He puts the things on the counter nearby.)

KATE: (hesitantly) Somebody gonna be taking his place on the raft?

(Jack shuts the drawer and looks at Kate.)

JACK: I don't know.

KATE: 'Cause, you know, Dr. Arzt said if they don't leave tomor --

JACK: (bluntly) Did you poison Michael, Kate?

KATE: What?

JACK: He's not sick. Someone did this.

(There's a long, heavy moment as Kate and Jack look at each other.)

KATE: Do you really think I'm capable of that?

(Jack shakes his head.)

JACK: I don't know what you're capable of.

(Kate turns and walks away.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. UNDER THE BIG TREE - NIGHT -- FLASHBACK]

(Kate is digging. She looks up and sees Tom walking back with a couple of beer
cans. Kate stops digging and smiles at Tom.)

KATE: You brought beer?

(He tosses her one. She catches it.)

TOM: No self-respecting man in Iowa goes anywhere without beer.

(Kate laughs as she pops the can open. Tom tilts his head back and drinks as he
leans against the car.)

(Kate's can foams over. She takes a long sip. Tom watches her thoughtfully.)

TOM: It's not fair, you know. (Kate turns and looks at Tom.) You coming back
-- here ... home.

(Tom drinks.)

KATE: Yeah. I know.

(Kate puts her beer can down on the ground and picks up the shovel. She resumes
digging. Suddenly, she hits something.)

(Tom chuckles. Kate smiles. They both share a quick look. Kate puts the
shovel aside and gets down on her hands and knees to dig.)

(She pulls out an old rusted metal lunch box. She gently, carefully brushes the
dirt off the cover.)

(Tom watches her. Kate looks up at him and smiles.)

CUT TO:

(It's a New Kids on the Block lunch box. Kate pops the lid open. Inside,
topmost, is a red Westhills baseball cap.)

(Kate and Tom are both leaning against the car as they look inside the old lunch
box.)

TOM: (whispers) Wow.

(Kate laughs.)

KATE: Wow ... look at this stuff.

(Kate takes out the red baseball cap. Tom reaches into the lunch box ... )

TOM: Oh, my God.

( ... and pulls out a small toy plane.)

TOM: My plane. (He chuckles at the memory.) I can't believe I let you talk me
into putting this in there.

KATE: Mnh-mnh. That was your idea.

(Inside the lunch box are other items. From what we see, there is an
autographed baseball

(Kate takes out a cracked cassette tape container.)

KATE: Kate and Tom. 1989.

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[INT. CAR (PARKED) - NIGHT - FLASHBACK]

(Kate and Tom sit in the parked car listening to the tape cassette.)

YOUNG TOM: (from tape) Is it on? I don't think it's on.

YOUNG KATE: (from tape) It's on.

(Both Kate and Tom smile as they listen to their younger selves.)

YOUNG TOM: (from tape) Okay, this is Kate Austin and Tom Brendon, and this is,
our dedication for our time capsule here on August 15th, 1989 -- Hey, give me
that back.

YOUNG KATE: (from tape) Why are you putting this stupid plane in there?

YOUNG TOM: (from tape) Because it's cool, Katie. I got it when I flew to
Dallas by myself.

YOUNG KATE: (from tape) Ooh, that is cool -- just like this time capsule.

YOUNG TOM: (from tape) It'll be totally cool when we dig it up in, like, twenty
years.

YOUNG KATE: (from tape) How do you know we'll be together?

YOUNG TOM: (from tape) 'Cause we'll be married. And you'll be a mom, and we'll
have nine kids.

YOUNG KATE: (from tape) (chuckles) I don't think so. Soon as I get my
license, we should just get in a car and drive -- like, you know, run away.

YOUNG TOM: (from tape) You always want to run away, Katie.

YOUNG KATE: (from tape) Yeah, and you know why.

(They turn the tape off.)

TOM: Funny how things turn out, huh?

KATE: Yeah.

(Kate and Tom turn and look at each other. They lean forward and kiss.)

(Tom pulls away.)

(He starts the car's engine.)

KATE: Sorry.

TOM: Yeah, we'd better get to the hospital.

KATE: Yeah.

(FAR SHOT: The car pulls away from the tree and the two bulls continue to graze
nearby.)

[INT. JUNGLE - LOCKE'S CAMPSITE -- DAY]

(Locke is using his knife to mix something in a coconut-shell bowl. His right
pants leg is rolled up to his knee. He looks up and sees Walt walking near
him.)

(Locke puts the knife, point down in the ground, and then starts to apply the
salve to his healing leg wound.)

WALT: What happened?

LOCKE: Had a little accident.

WALT: Does it hurt?

LOCKE: Yep.

(Locke smiles.)

(Locke finishes, then unrolls his pants leg down. He stands up.)

LOCKE: Something you want to tell me, Walt?

WALT: (blurts) I didn't do it.

LOCKE: Didn't do what?

WALT: I heard Jack. He thinks somebody got my dad sick. And I didn't do it.

LOCKE: You think because I know you burned the first raft that I'd think you
made your dad sick?

(Walt nods. Locke turns to kneel in front of Walt.)

LOCKE: We're friends, Walt. I didn't tell on you before, I'm not gonna tell on
you now, and I know you would never do anything to hurt your dad.

(Locke reaches out and puts a hand on Walt's arm. As soon as he touches Walt,
Walt look down at Locke's hand.)

(Walt pulls his arm out of Locke's touch and takes a frightened step backward.)

LOCKE: What's the matter?

WALT: Don't open it.

(Walt backs away from Locke.)

LOCKE: What did you say?

WALT: (urgently) Don't open it, Mr. Locke. Don't open that thing.

(Locke stands up.)

LOCKE: What -- what thing? What are you --

WALT: (insistent) Just don't open it!

(Walt turns and leaves. Camera holds on Locke.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(CLOSE-UP: A pink bottle with a white child-proof cap hits the ground in front
of Michael. The label reads:
PROTECTIVE
STOMACH RELIEF )

(Michael, still clutching his stomach, looks from the bottle to Sawyer standing
nearby.)

SAWYER: Thought you might need that, boss.

(Michael picks up the bottle and looks at it. Sawyer walks around them. Jin is
sitting, his back to Michael, and drinking from his water bottle.)

SAWYER: Wouldn't want our pilot out of commission before takeoff.

MICHAEL: What, you feeling guilty?

SAWYER: What?

MICHAEL: You're off the raft.

SAWYER: Come again?

MICHAEL: You're off the raft!

SAWYER: We had a deal.

MICHAEL: Yeah, well, the deal ended the minute you decided to poison me.

SAWYER: I did what now?

MICHAEL: I'm done with you.

SAWYER: You ain't done with me by a damn sight. You said you needed four.

MICHAEL: I got four! (Michael gets to his feet.) You've been stealing stuff
off of dead bodies, keeping it for yourself, using it to buy favors. You're a
liar and a criminal, and I'm not letting you near my boy.

SAWYER: Oh, I'm a criminal, huh? (shouts) I poisoned you 'cause I'm a
criminal!

(Sawyer advances on Michael. Alarmed, Jin stands up and pushes Sawyer away. In
the background, we see people gathering around to watch the argument.)

SAWYER: Get your hands off of me, boy.

(Sawyer glares at them, then turns around and heads for Kate, who has her
backpack on the raft and is going through it. Hurley is standing next to her.)

SAWYER: (to Kate) Hey, sweet cheeks! I had no idea how bad you wanted off
this rock. (Sawyer grabs Kate's arm and starts pulling her back to Michael and
the center of the group.) Time to set things straight.

(Kate struggles.)

KATE: Let go of me.

SAWYER: Tell him who the criminal is!

(Charlie steps forward.)

CHARLIE: All right, leave her alone, man!

(Sawyer pushes Kate in front of Michael.)

SAWYER: Tell him!

(Michael glares at Sawyer.)

(Kate doesn't say anything.)

(Suddenly, Sawyer grabs Kate's backpack off her arm and pulls it away from her.
Kate turns and tries to get her pack back.

KATE: Give that back!

MICHAEL: Leave her alone!

(Sawyer opens Kate's backpack.)

SAWYER: Leave her alone?

KATE: Give that back!

(Again, Kate lunges for the backpack. Sawyer turns and pulls it out of her
reach. He empties Kate's backpack onto the sand. Kate tries to grab something
from her things on the ground, but Sawyer picks it up. He holds up a passport
book.)

SAWYER: Mm-hmm. Look.

(Claire and the baby have joined the group.)

SAWYER: Look at this.

(Sawyer opens the passport.)

KATE: (quietly) Sawyer, please.

(But Sawyer is too far gone to listen. He looks at the passport and chuckles.)

SAWYER: (to the group) You all remember Joanna, don't you? Huh?

(Sawyer gives the passport to Michael. He takes it and looks at it.)

SAWYER: The woman who drowned? Now, what's Kate doing with poor Joanna's ID.?

(Michael looks at Kate.)

SAWYER: Could it be she'd do just about anything to get on that raft so she can
get herself rescued, run off with a new identity before half the reporters in
the world descend on this damn island? She might even poison the captain
himself.

KATE: Shut up!

(Sawyer turns. Both he and Michael look at Kate.)

SAWYER: She don't care about nothing or nobody but herself.

CUT TO:

[INT. HOSPITAL - MORNING -- FLASHBACK]

(Tom and Nick push the gurney out from the room.)

OVERHEAD: (over p.a.) Paging technician coronary care. Paging technician
coronary card.

(They stop the gurney in the middle of the hallway.)

TOM: Yeah, uh, this is good here, Nick. Thank you.

(Nick leaves.)

(Tom glances around, then walks to the end of the hallway. Kate steps out, her
eyes on her mom on the gurney.)

TOM: My office is right back there. I'll wait for you.

KATE: Okay.

(Tom turns and leaves Kate alone with Diane.)

(Kate walks up to the gurney and looks at the blonde-haired woman on it. Diane
Jansen's eyes are closed.)

KATE: Hi, Mom. Can you hear me? Mom?

(Diane's eyes open.)

DIANE JANSEN: uhmm.

KATE: Mom?

(Diane looks around, then sees Kate. Kate starts to cry.)

KATE: It's me -- Katie.

(Kate holds Diane's hand. Diane looks at Kate. Kate smiles at her.)

DIANE JANSEN: Katherine?

KATE: It's me. Katherine. (Kate starts to cry.) I'm so sorry for everything
that I have put you through.

(Kate cries.)

(Tears run down Diane's eyes.)

DIANE JANSEN: Help.

KATE: It's okay, Mom. It's just me.

DIANE JANSEN: (high pitched) Help ... (louder) help!

KATE: Shh, shh, shh, shh. It's okay.

DIANE JANSEN: (louder) Help!

KATE: Mom.

DIANE JANSEN: (louder still) Help! Help me!

(Diane pulls her hand out of Kate's.)

DIANE JANSEN: (loud) Help me! Someone help me!

(Kate backs away.)

(Down the hallway, Nick returns. He turns and looks at Kate. Nick heads over
to Diane's gurney. Kate backs away.)

DIANE JANSEN: Help me. Help me. Somebody ...

(Kate runs out through the double doors.)

DIANE JANSEN: (o.s.) ... help me!

[INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - MORNING -- FLASHBACK - CONTINUOUS]

(Kate walks quickly down the corridor and meets up with a security guard.)

SECURITY GUARD: What's going on?

KATE: I'm her daughter. She's just confused. I - I was going to get a doctor.

(Kate turns to leave, but the security guard grabs her arm. He takes out his
walkie-talkie.)

SECURITY GUARD: Hang on. (to the walkie-talkie) We got a situation here --

(Kate grabs the walkie-talkie from him and hits him hard across the face with
it. He falls to the ground with a thud.)

(Kate backs away from the security guard.)

(Tom comes out of the double doors with the sign MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGINING /
DANGER on it.)

TOM: Oh, God ...

(He sees the security guard on the ground and looks at Kate.)

TOM: What happened?

KATE: I need your car keys.

(Kate starts running down the hallway. Tom takes off after her.)

TOM: Hey, Katie.

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

[EXT. HOSPITAL -- PARKING GARAGE - MORNING -FLASHBACK]

(Sirens blare in the distance.)

(Kate bursts out through the red parking garage door. She runs like hell toward
Tom's car. Tom is right there on her heels.)

(Kate gets into the driver's seat in Tom's car, license #394 GC2. Tom gets into
the passenger seat.)

(Kate starts the engine and backs out of the parking stall. Tires screeching,
she guns the engine and speeds through the parking garage. Small note, Tom's
missing a front license plate.)

(Kate reaches to exit and sees a State Trooper car turning in, blocking the
exit.)

(Both cars stop. The State Trooper gets out of the car.)

(Kate looks at the State Trooper, then at Tom.)

KATE: Get out.

TOM: I am not letting you do this. Katie, if you cooperate, they go easy --

KATE: He's calling for backup. I've got to go. Get out.

TOM: You'll have a real life.

KATE: Tom, come on. Please.

TOM: No.

KATE: Now. Get out.

TOM: No!

(In front of them, the State Trooper takes out his gun and points it at their
car.)

(Kate looks at Tom and at the State Trooper. Finally, she guns the engine,
bursts through the parking arm, breaking it. She heads straight for the State
Trooper. The State Trooper starts to fire.)

(He gets off three shots; two hit the windshield. Kate continues to drive
forward. She hits the State Trooper's car and drives around it.)

(The State Trooper turns and continues to fire at Kate.)

(Kate hits the side of an oncoming, tan-colored vehicle. She comes to a halt.)

(Kate gasps for breath. She turns and looks at Tom, who doesn't move. We see a
stream of blood from his nose. Kate turns to check on Tom.)

KATE: Tom?

(She gets a look at him. In the distance, we hear the sounds of sirens.)

KATE: Tom? Tom?

(Kate realizes that Tom has been shot in the chest.)

KATE: Oh, God, Tom!

(She turns his head to check on him, but he's not moving.)

KATE: (crying) No, no, no, no, no, Tom! Please, wake up.

(The sirens are getting louder and nearer. Kate doesn't know what to do as she
looks at Tom's chest wound. She looks up and sees a State Trooper car
approaching.)

(She looks in the back seat of the car, she looks at the items from the lunch
box time capsule: A plastic Minnie Mouse figurine, an autographed baseball, a
toy plane, the cassette tape and the red baseball cap.)

(The sirens are getting louder. Kate glances back from the officer car to Tom.
She opens the door and runs out of the car. She jumps over the nearby railing
and runs down the empty canal.)

(The sirens continue to wail.)

(Camera lingers on Kate as she runs away.)

SAWYER: (v.o.) You want to tell us why you need to run so bad? You want to
tell us the truth?

CUT TO:
END OF FLASHBACK
RESUME TO PRESENT.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE - DAY - PRESENT]

(Kate looks at Sawyer and Michael. FAR CAMERA SHOT of Kate standing in the
center of the small group.)

(Everyone waits for Kate's response.)

KATE: Yes. I was on the plane ... with the marshal. Yes, I was wanted and ...
caught ... and being transported back. No matter what I say about what
happened, about what supposedly did ... I'm going to jail. (to Michael) But I
didn't poison you.

(Kate takes a step toward Michael. Michael backs away from her. Michael hands
Kate back the passport.)

MICHAEL: Here.

(Kate takes the passport from him. He walks away. The group disburses.
Shannon glares wordlessly at Kate. Claire and Charlie turn and walk away.
Sawyer leaves Kate alone with her things.)

(Kate sits down on the sand in front of her things.)

(She looks down at the toy airplane in the sand.)

FADE OUT.

(COMMERCIAL SET)

FADE IN.

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- DAY]

(Work on the raft continues. On the side, Sun watches them work.)

(On the side, Sun watches Jin.)

(Jack walks up to Sun.)

JACK: Looks determined.

SUN: Yes, he is.

JACK: You don't want him to go, do you?

SUN: No.

JACK: Is that why you tried to make him sick?

(Busted, Sun looks at Jack.)

JACK: Michael and Jin are working together all the time. It'd be pretty easy
for them to get their water bottles mixed up.

SUN: I didn't want him to die out there. I just didn't know what to do. I
only used enough to make him ... (Jack nods.) I wasn't trying to hurt him.

(Sun starts to cry.)

SUN: Are you going to tell the others?

JACK: (shakes his head) I don't see any reason why they need to know. But,
Sun ... he's going. If I were you, I'd ... I'd say goodbye.

(Sun nods. Jack turns and leaves.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH (STOCK) -- SUNSET]

(The ocean waves crash onto shore.)

[EXT. BEACH - KATE'S SHELTER -- NIGHT]

(Kate stands alone at the fire, poking at it with a large stick. Sawyer walks
up to her.)

SAWYER: I'm back on the raft.

KATE: Glad to hear it.

SAWYER: Michael's going to cowboy up. We set sail tomorrow.

KATE: You here to say "sorry," Sawyer?

(He chuckles and shakes his head.)

SAWYER: Nah. "Sorry" don't suit me. You cornered me, freckles. Did what I
had to.

(Kate shakes her head with disbelief.)

KATE: I cornered you.

SAWYER: You said if you wanted my spot, you were going to take it. Guess I
believed you.

(Kate doesn't say anything.)

SAWYER: Well ... that's that. I got some packing to do.

(Sawyer turns to leave, but Kate stops him.)

KATE: Why is it so important for you to be on that raft?

(He turns around.)

SAWYER: Because there ain't anything on this island worth staying for.

(Kate looks away.)

KATE: Be safe, Sawyer.

SAWYER: Yeah.

(Sawyer turns and leaves. Kate watches him go.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - BOAT SITE -- NIGHT]

(Michael is sitting under the tree near the boat when Walt climbs off the raft
and runs up to him.)

WALT: Dad.

(Walt sits next to Michael. Michael puts his arm around Walt's shoulders.)

MICHAEL: Hey, buddy.

WALT: Getting better?

MICHAEL: Yeah. Yep, going to be all right.

(Walt nods and looks away. He appears worried about something.)

MICHAEL: Hey. Don't worry. I'm going to be on my feet soon, and we'll be
sailing home before you can even --

WALT: (interrupts) I'm the one that burnt the raft.

(Michael is suddenly very, very quiet.)

WALT: I didn't want to leave, and I thought I could stop you. I'm sorry. I'm
really sorry, Dad.

MICHAEL: Hey, it's okay, man. We can stay here. You and me. (Walt shakes his
head.) We don't have to go.

(Walt turns and looks at Michael.)

WALT: Yes, we do.

(Michael looks at Walt. Camera holds on Walt.)

CUT TO:

[EXT. BEACH - KATE'S SHELTER -- NIGHT]

(Kate is sitting in her shelter, lost in her own thoughts when Sun joins her.)

SUN: Hello.

KATE: Hey.

(Sun sits down.)

SUN: Jack knows. (Kate looks away.) I didn't tell him it was your idea.

(Kate nods.)

KATE: Thanks.

SUN: Why should you be punished? You were only trying to help me.

(Kate looks at Sun.)

SUN: He said he wouldn't tell the others.

KATE: Yeah. Jack's good at keeping secrets.

SUN: When I was a little girl ... I believed that once I found the man I loved
... I would be happy ... forever.

KATE: Yeah. Me too.

(Camera holds on Kate.)
